Olivia Rodrigo’s New Christmas Song Is Inspired by a 1981 Hit by the Waitresses ...Saudi Arabia

News by : (Parade) -

If Olivia Rodrigo’s infectious new Christmas song “take me home (4 christmas)” sounds familiar, it’s because it’s wrapped in the same nostalgic production as one of the 1980s’ quintessential holiday hits. The Waitresses’ founder, guitarist, and lead songwriter, Chris Butler, confirmed that the band’s 1981 hit “Christmas Wrapping” inspired Rodrigo’s debut Christmas song — and he has an email from Rodrigo to prove it.

From jamming out with Alanis Morissette at Daisy Chain Fields this summer to dueting with the Cure’s Robert Smith on her latest album, Rodrigo has made her respect for the pop-rock legends who inspired her sound loud and clear over the years. She’s also paid her respects to those legends in private. On October 30, Butler revealed in a Facebook post that Rodrigo emailed him, gushing about her love for the Waitresses and inviting him to listen to a Christmas song she’d written. Unaware of who she was (can you imagine!), Butler did a deep dive into her career and seemingly found his new favorite artist. He shared, “Her song was/is great. It’s going to be a smash, maybe even that elusive Christmas #1 contest they have every year in the UK.”

Butler and the Waitresses aren’t credited on “take me home (4 christmas),” as the song doesn’t actually sample or interpolate “Christmas Wrapping,” but the inspiration is definitely clear. Butler shared a link to the song’s music video on Facebook upon its release on November 5 and wrapped up any conversations about plagiarism by saying, “I think it’s a fantasticbangersmash [sic], and if it has the same upbeat vibe as ‘CW’, well… how cool is that? I’m a fan, and I wish her monster success with it. Thanks, Olivia, for the chance to connect.”

“Christmas Wrapping” peaked at number 45 on the UK Singles chart a year after its release. With support from Butler and a star-studded music video, let’s see if Rodrigo’s first-ever Christmas song can take home a higher spot this holiday season.
