LOS OLIVOS, Calif. — A local nonprofit is using the power of film to bring audiences closer to nature and inspire greater awareness of wildlife conservation and environmental issues.
The NatureTrack Film Festival is showcasing wildlife documentaries and environmental stories in the Santa Ynez Valley, with a mission to encourage people to connect with and protect the planet.
The festival's opening night was held at the Santa Ynez Valley Grange Hall in Los Olivos, featuring a sneak peek of National Geographic's Animal Oddballs and the California premiere of Frost Without Snow and Ice.
The latter follows a polar bear over more than 13 years, offering viewers an intimate look at the animal and the broader impacts of climate change.
Sue Eisaguirre, founder of NatureTrack, said films like these can help audiences develop a personal connection to wildlife and better understand environmental challenges.
"It's a story about this polar bear. He had been watching this bear for 13-plus years," Eisaguirre said. "You really build that empathy. It creates empathy for that species, but also makes you realize it's a bigger issue."
NatureTrack, a Santa Barbara County nonprofit, was founded to make outdoor experiences more accessible, including opportunities for schoolchildren and people with mobility challenges.
The film festival builds on that mission by using storytelling to spark curiosity about wildlife, conservation and the environment.
Eisaguirre said developing a love for nature can encourage people to take an active role in protecting it.
"When people have that intrinsic love of something, of anything, you want to protect it," she said. "So if they fall in love with nature and see how fun it is, see how amazing it is, and see ways that they can make a difference, then it's good for everyone."
The festival also brought screenings to the Alcázar Theatre in Carpinteria on Thursday, expanding its reach to another Santa Barbara County community.
Organizers hope audiences leave with a new appreciation for the natural world and a desire to learn more about the environmental stories featured on screen.
"What I hope you take away from this festival or for any of the films is that you leave the theater going, 'Wow, that was amazing. I can't believe I just saw that. I didn't know that,'" Eisaguirre said.
NatureTrack plans to continue making nature and wildlife stories accessible to the community, with additional screenings planned for the year ahead.
