Kevin Costner is launching his own fragrance line and it’s already impressing people. The Yellowstone actor, 71, has teamed up with the brand 19-69 to create scents called Pacific Coast Highway, Heritage, and After Hours, and the latter got attention from a pregnant woman at his son’s volleyball game.
“She walks all across the gym towards me,” he told GQ about the encounter. “And I wasn’t sure what this was going to be about. And she just turns to me and says, ‘Look, I’m married, I’m not [trying to bother you]. But what are you wearing?’”
The talented star was wearing After Hours, which has notes of nutmeg, bourbon, and cypress, and it reminds him of a 1989 photo shoot for Vanity Fair that he did with Helmut Newton.
“So, I was in a tuxedo but my tie was off and my jacket was on the couch,” he explained in the interview, released on Nov. 6. “It was supposed to be a sexy shot with a glass of whiskey. And Helmut kept saying, ‘take your shirt off, just leave the bow tie on or something’… I said no. I’m not an exotic dancer!”
19-69 co-founder Johan Bergelin confirmed that the scent, which was inspired by California and ’80s glam bands that hung out at Los Angeles’ famous Rainbow Room on the Sunset Strip, is a take on the brand’s Rainbow Bar fragrance, which is why Costner got involved. He was smitten when he encountered it in a hotel room in Germany over 10 years ago.“Can’t tell you why, don’t even know what it was,” Costner admitted. “I came back home to America, and probably over the next year, periodically, I actually thought about it. But then it faded in like a song you can’t remember.”
Costner came across the scent years later in Scotland and was determined to find out what it was.
Costner’s fragrances retail for $80, $300, or $800 per bottle, depending on the size, and are based on his life. They’re available for pre-order now on the brand’s website and are expected to begin shipping in early November.
