The University of Alabama SGA announced Friday more than 70,000 students across the UA System would receive access to Canva Enterprise for free by the end of the semester.
Canva for Campus, the site’s higher education platform, provides design tools that can help students create and support presentations, resumes, graphics and more.
SGA president Samantha Simmons spearheaded a student-led initiative to expand access to Canva, and developed a formal proposal to the UA System, using research on the tactics of institutions such as Vanderbilt University and the University of Texas at Austin, where students gained similar access to Canva.
“Student voices should play an important role in shaping the resources and opportunities available across our University,” Simmons said. “We recognized a need, listened to what students were asking for and worked alongside University leadership to turn that feedback into meaningful action. We are excited that this initiative will benefit students across all three campuses and provide them with tools they can use throughout their academic and professional careers.”
The SGA also conducted a student survey with more than 1,500 respondents across the University’s colleges and schools, with over 95.5% of students indicating they would use Canva regularly if provided free access.
After SGA presented it to the University’s Office of Information Technology, OIT submitted a request to University Provost Lesley Reid, which was approved.
The SGA said the University would commit more than $100,000 to provide students with Canva Enterprise.
Following the approval of access to Canva Enterprise at the University, the SGA presented to Tonjanita Johnson, senior vice chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs for the University of Alabama System, advocating for students at UAB and UAH to receive the same access.
The SGA also announced that in partnership with OIT, students would receive expanded access to Google Gemini in the spring semester of 2027.
