‘Possible Love’ Ending Explained: Do Ho-seok and Mi-ok Leave The Mansion? Do They Reach Home Safely? ...Saudi Arabia

News by : (Parade) -

Netflix’s Possible Love is a profound look at what desires actually mean and if real love is possible when you throw all your desires out of the window.

The Korean film chronicles the journey of a working class couple, Choi Ho-seok and his wife Ahn Mi-ok, trying to keep their family together after a major labor dispute upends their lives. As documentarian Lee Ye-ji starts filming Ho-seok and his wife Mi-ok, it becomes harder and harder to draw the line between their personal struggles and the wider issues of class, marriage and human dignity. The film ends with a number of emotional questions still hanging in the air, particularly as the couple go back to their normal lives. So what happens at the end of Possible Love and what does it mean for the family?

Do Ho-seok and Mi-ok Leave The Mansion? Do They Reach Home Safely?

Possible Love ends with a lot of questions rather than straight answers. Ho-seok and Mi-ok leave Sang-woo’s posh coastal mansion after Mi-ok has had quite enough of Ye-ji’s documentary.

She’s seen the filmmaker intrude so many times into their private lives (including following her into the forest to film Ho-seok in the midst of a breakdown) that she’s come to the conclusion that their family have effectively become the subject of a project she can no longer tolerate.

Mi-ok demands the filming stop and tells Ho-seok they have to go. Their exit effectively brings to an end the awkward situation in which the couple have been living at Ye-ji and Sang-woo’s place.

Before they leave, their 10-year-old son Cheol waves a final goodbye to the groundskeeper from the back of the car. He’s also been quietly taking the very valuable whistle off the property. That little detail gives us a real insight into the kid’s observations over the weekend, particularly his interest in the adults and their world.

However, the biggest blow comes when they are driving back to home. The news that SP Heavy Industries has been acquired by an American private equity house is a massive setback for Ho-seok. His chances of going back to the factory are now even more remote. The very workplace that had been the crux of his identity is now even further out of reach.

When they get home Mi-ok gets a message from Ye-ji asking if they’d arrived safely. She thinks about just sending her a photo of the full moon they’d spoken about during their stay. She doesn’t do it.

The film simply ends. There’s no dramatic reconciliation, no resolution to their problems. They just go back to the life they’ve always known and their problems are still there.

Why Does Mi-ok Decide Not to Reply to Ye-ji?

Mi-ok’s decision to not reply to Ye-ji is one of the most poignant final moments of the film. Previously the two women had bonded over their shared memories of childhood, particularly their shared experience of looking at the full moon. For a moment it was as if their differences didn’t matter at all in the way that they were two women with a common history.

However that connection becomes complicated as Mi-ok realizes that Ye-ji’s interest in their family is predicated on the expectation that their struggles will be filmed. She wants their lives on camera, often without any regard for the impact that having their lives filmed will have on them.

Mi-ok’s memory of playing with a hose at her mother’s car wash is very significant here. Her mother was quite concerned that Mi-ok would end up doing the same job eventually. Ye-ji sees it as a very potent story about invisible labor.

The very contrast shows how people can view the same experience in quite different ways depending on where they are in society. For Mi-ok they’re personal memories. For Ye-ji they’re material for a documentary.

The fact that the photo hasn’t been sent suggests Mi-ok hasn’t quite forgotten about it. She just doesn’t feel comfortable with continuing the connection. At times, the only way to take back some control over your own narrative is to simply not respond.

What Does ‘Possible Love’ Really Mean?

The bigger point of the film becomes apparent through Ho-seok’s experience after the factory strike. He was a respected welder and has now lost his job and is one of the ‘dead’. The ones who stayed on are the ‘living”.

His anger in the documentary interview is absolutely palpable and speaks volumes about how much the incident has impacted him. He’s lost all faith in the union platitudes about solidarity, struggle and workers’ rights. The people who were meant to be in it together ended up in very different places.

Mi-ok is still working in the mask factory and is still trying to hold the family together. It’s also been a bit of a challenge to Ye-ji in terms of her understanding of working class life which she’s been attempting to get at through the documentary.

The ending doesn’t suggest that love is the answer to financial hardship, to workplace injustice or to years of emotional damage. It simply shows how hard it can be to stay connected when the world outside is so unkind and unhelpful.

Ultimately, Possible Love is less about a perfect resolution than about the invisible struggles that people carry around with them every day. Ho-seok and Mi-ok may not have got out of it, but the story does serve to remind us that to really understand someone else’s life you have to look beyond just watching it.
