2026 HUNGARIAN SHORT COURSE CHAMPIONSHIPS
Wednesday, November 4th – Saturday, November 7th Prelims at 9am local (3am ET), Finals at 5pm local (11am ET) Csik Ferenc Swimming Pool, Kaposvár, Hungary SCM (25m) SwimSwam Preview Meet Central Entries/Live ResultsThe 2026 Hungarian Short Course Championships kicked off from Kaposvár with a large domestic contingent set to compete at the Csik Ferenc Swimming Pool over the next several days.
As a reminder, the nation of Hungary is not sending an official contingent to this year’s Short Course World Championships, with only Olympic champions Hubert Kos and Kristof Milak being offered the opportunity to compete in Beijing next month.
That means roster slots are not on the line at this competition, rather the racers will be vying for hardware, titles and bragging rights among their domestic rivals.
Wasting no time making his presence known already was Gabor Zombori, with the 24-year-old getting it done for gold in the men’s 200m IM to begin his campaign.
Zombori stopped the clock at a time of 1:54.54 for the decisive victory, beating the pack by over two seconds.
Next to the wall was Balazs Hollo who touched in 1:56.77 for silver, as Dominik Torok rounded out the podium in 1:57.25.
For Zombori, his performance checked in as a new lifetime best for the Hungarian, overtaking his former PB of 1:54.72 logged in the semi-finals of the event at last year’s Short Course European Championships. There in Lublin, Poland, Zombori ultimately placed 8th in a slightly slower result of 1:54.97.
22-year-old Panna Ugrai reaped two gold medals on the evening, racing in the women’s 100m free and 50m back events.
In the former, Ugrai delivered a time of 52.90 as the clear winner, getting to the wall over half a second ahead of her peers.
Ugrai held off Gloria Muzito who represents Uganda, with Muzito posting 53.49 for a new national record. Angelina Rolman of the Netherlands touched in 54.59 as the bronze medalist.
Then in the 50m back, Ugrai registered a winning effort of 26.63, a time just .10 shy of her career-swiftest time of 26.53 while competing in Germany in 2025.
Additional Notes
26-year-old World Championships and European Championships multi-medalist Nandor Nemeth proved too quick to catch in the men’s 100m free, posting 46.57 as the sole competitor to clear the 47-second barrier. Adam Jaszo turned in a time of 47.76 as the silver medalist, with Heiko Gigler also landing on the podium in 48.02, good enough for bronze. Nemeth’s outing ties the 7th-best performance of his career, one which boasts a lifetime best of 46.08 from finishing in 5th place at the 2023 European Short Course Championships. Jaszo also raced in the men’s 50m back in the same session, where the 24-year-old settled for silver behind winner Oliver Nell. Nell hit 24.00 for a new lifetime best, as Jaszo put up 24.12 in the tight battle. David Antal was also right there, producing 24.18 for a 3rd-place finish. National record holder Ajna Kesely topped the women’s 1500m freestyle podium, delivering a performance of 16:01.13. Although that was well outside the Hungarian standard of 15:51.34 she notched in 2023, it was enough to hold off versatile 18-year-old Vivien Jackl who logged 16:03.87, a mark only .04 outside her fastest ever. Isabella Csitari rounded out the podium in 16:15.37. The men’s 100m breaststroke saw a pair of Austrians capture two of the medal-earning spots, with teammates Christopher Rothbauer and Valentin Bayer reaping respective gold and bronze. The former touched in 58.16 and the latter hit 59.20, with domestic swimmer David Horvath splitting the duo in 59.11. Further down the line, Bence Kenderella clocked a new Hungarian Age Record in this event, registering 59.98 to become the first-ever Hungarian 16-year-old to dip beneath the minute threshold. Kenderella’s outing overwrote the former Age Record of 1:00.04 Olympic champion Daniel Gyurta nabbed in 2005. Henrietta Fangli won the women’s edition of the 100m breast, putting up a gold medal-worthy time of 1:06.21. That edged out the competition by over a second, with Laura Zsebok snagging silver in 1:07.37 and Virag Peter immediately behind in 1:07.73 for bronze.Read the full story on SwimSwam: Gabor Zombori Puts Up Lifetime Best In SCM 200 IM At Hungarian Nationals
