Junior Nationals qualifier Josh Pendleton has announced his verbal commitment to swim and study at Brigham Young University, becoming the first commit in the Cougars’ class of 2032. He publicized the news on SwimCloud, writing:
I am super excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at Brigham Young University! I am so grateful for my family, teammates, and friends for always supporting me. I’d also like to thank all my high school and club coaches, especially my first coach, Coach Jennifer Brinegar, for helping me get to where I am today. Special thanks to all the BYU coaching staff for this opportunity. GO COUGS!!
A junior at Columbus East High School in Columbus, Indiana, Pendleton trains year-round with Center Grove Aquatic Club, where he primarily specializes in distance freestyle. At the Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) State Championships last February, he set his current lifetime bests in the 200 and 500 free, placing sixth in the 500 (4:32.58) and ninth in the 200 (1:41.79). The swims capped a season in which he dropped over three and a half seconds in the 200 free and about a second and a half in the 500.
Pendleton also holds a lifetime best of 16:13.13 in the 1650 free from the 2025-26 season. He swam the race only once that season, clocking a season-best 16:26.35 at the FAST Santa Claus Classic in December.
Over the summer, Pendleton qualified for and competed at Summer Junior Nationals (LCM), where he placed 18th in the 1500 free (15:26.24, a PB) and 54th in the 400 free (4:03.17). Earlier in the season, he recorded PBs of 1:57.22 in the 200 free, 4:02.60 in the 400 free and 8:25.22 in the 800 free.

It took 1:36.75 in the 200 free, 4:27.57 in the 500 free and 15:50.33 in the 1650 free to score, leaving Pendleton outside those marks for now, but he has nearly three seasons of training ahead before his first conference meet.
