Christina Applegate is sharing a candid update about her health.
The 54-year-old actress was recently misdiagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS). Jack Osbourne joined Applegate and Jamie-Lynn Sigler for a recent episode of the MesSy podcast. He opened up about having a chronic autoimmune disease and asked the Married… with Children star about her health journey.
“We’re going into square one, just doing some testing and going one-by-one of the sister diseases to MS,” she said.
“You’ve got RA [rheumatoid arthritis], lupus, Lyme disease, all these things can kind of mimic MS,” she explained. “So now I’m being tested for all that stuff slowly but surely.”
Applegate was diagnosed with the disease in 2021. In October, five years later, she revealed that she was misdiagnosed with MS.
“She came into my room and said, ‘Congratulations, you don’t have MS,’” the Dead to Me star recalled. “I was, like, not happy at all. Everybody else was so happy.”
Multiple sclerosis damages the protective cover around nerves in the central nervous system, per the Cleveland Clinic. Symptoms include muscle weakness, vision changes, numbness, and memory issues. There is no cure, but pain and progression can be treated.
After finding out she was misdiagnosed, Applegate struggled with pain and severe symptoms.
“I’ve gone through a great depression because of it. But I lost everything. I lost my job. I lost — I’m sorry. What do you say to someone who’s been living with this for six years — God, I’m so sorry — because it stopped my life,” the actress said. “I still have to use wheelchairs when I go to the doctor’s office. I can’t walk from the car to the room. I’m still in this. Nothing magical happened when she said, ‘You don’t have MS.’ Nothing magical happened.”
In March, Applegate was admitted to the hospital for several months. She was discharged in August. It is unclear why she was hospitalized.
At the time, her reps told Page Six, “She’s had a long history of complicated medical conditions that she has been refreshingly open about.”
