For the first time since 2016, UNC will not win the ACC Field Hockey Tournament.
The top-seeded Tar Heels, hosting the tournament at Karen Shelton Stadium, fell to No. 4 seed Syracuse in the tournament semifinals Wednesday. The game went to a shootout after being tied 2-2 at the end of regulation and the overtime period.
The Tar Heels ended the game having outshot the Orange 22-5 overall, but did not have the lead for a single second. All of the regulation scoring came in the second quarter, as Syracuse struck first before UNC’s Jenna Narleski tied the game at 1-1 less than two minutes later. The Orange went in front again 2-1, and Charly Bruder knotted the score again with less than a minute left before halftime.
Carolina consistently knocked on the door in the second half and did not allow a single Syracuse shot. But Orange goalie Tane King, brought in after halftime, stopped all four of UNC’s shots on goal in the second half and two more in the overtime to preserve the 2-2 tie.
Once the game went to a shootout, UNC took an early advantage after Merritt Skubisz stopped the initial Orange try and Ryleigh Heck converted on the Tar Heels’ first. The script flipped after that, though, as all three of Syracuse’s next takers converted and all three of Carolina’s did not, with Dani Mendez’s miss clinching the upset win for Syracuse.
The loss drops UNC to 12-7 overall. The Tar Heels will now hope for an at-large bid to the 2026 NCAA Tournament, with the full 18-team field set to be announced Sunday, Nov. 8 at 10 p.m. Carolina has not missed the tournament since 2002.
