The story behind one of Hollywood’s most famous underdogs is getting the big-screen treatment again.
I Play Rocky, a new biopic about Sylvester Stallone‘s struggle to make the 1976 film and play its title character, stars Anthony Ippolito as a young Stallone. The movie opens in select theaters Nov. 13, with a nationwide release Nov. 20.

Sylvester Stallone Was So Broke He Got Married in a ‘Capone’ Costume
In 1974, Stallone married his first wife, Sasha Czack.
Struggling financially, with all their funds going toward rent, groceries, car repairs, etc., the couple couldn’t afford proper wedding attire. So, Czack made her wedding dress from an old linen curtain in the house they rented.
Stallone recalled the difficult circumstances in his memoir, writing, “We were barely surviving.”
As for the groom, his own wedding outfit was just as unconventional.
Stallone had a supporting role in the gangster film Capone, released in 1975, and borrowed a double-breasted 1920s gangster suit from the movie’s wardrobe department, complete with spats and shoes, for his walk down the aisle.
“With my greased-back period haircut, I looked like I fell out of a time machine,” he remembered with humor.
‘Rocky’ Changed Stallone’s Fortune
Just two years later, Rocky arrived in theaters.
Stallone had written the screenplay in three days, drawing on his own experience of struggling to get a chance in Hollywood. Producers wanted the script but initially wanted another actor in the lead. Despite having just $106 in the bank, Stallone refused to sell unless he could play Rocky, with offers reportedly climbing as high as $360,000 for the screenplay without him starring.
Good thing he didn’t sell.
Rocky became the highest-grossing film of 1976 and went on to win Best Picture at the Academy Awards. Stallone later told Variety that he received an initial $35,000 for his work on the film, but his 10 net points brought his total earnings to about $2.5 million.
“I got 10 net points,” he explained. “In all, I earned about $2.5 million, which for me was unbelievable.” He added, “I was the luckiest man in the world.”
Stallone’s Success Didn’t Stop With ‘Rocky’
The Oscar-winning filmmaker went on to build two more major action franchises with Rambo and The Expendables, while returning to the role of Rocky Balboa in the Creed films. He has also continued working in television, most recently starring as Dwight Manfredi in Paramount+’s Tulsa King, which has been renewed for a fifth season.
Across five decades, Stallone has established himself as an actor, screenwriter, director, and producer, with the struggling young actor who once borrowed a movie costume for his wedding becoming one of Hollywood’s most enduring leading men.
