King Charles III is currently the middle of his nine-day royal tour of the Caribbean. All was going well until last night’s tropical rainstorm on Antigua, when Charles’ aide—and his umbrella—were nowhere to be seen.
Charles and Queen Camilla were attending the official celebration of Antigua and Barbuda’s 45th independence day when torrential rain swept over the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium.
An umbrella was quickly handed to Camilla and she was escorted away from the dais, but a fuming Charles was left looking around and making frustrated gestures for an umbrella of his own.
In a video shared by the BBC the king is seen throwing his hands up in disbelief as his aide continued to fail to materialise.
By the time Charles was given an umbrella his beige suit was soaking wet from the rain. But he seemed to recover his good humor, later joking to Antiguan Prime Minister Gaston Browne, “I think I’m growing watercress on my suit.”

It’s not the first time that Charles has been caught on camera becoming visibly frustrated at a formal event. Only days into his reign as monarch following the death of his mother Queen Elizabeth II, he almost snapped over a pen that leaked when he was signing a visitor’s book at Hillsborough Castle in Belfast.
“Oh God, I hate this,” he said to Camilla as he handed the pen to her. He continued, “I can’t bear this bloody thing… every stinking time.”
Charles landed in the Bahamas on November 1 and gave a speech in which he acknowledged the “great suffering and injustices” of the country’s past.
He also paid tribute to Bahamian culture, in which all that was most joyful and bright “was born out of darkness.”
Charles also visited Guyana before he was joined in Antigua and Barbuda by his wife. The couple are set to attend a summit of Commonwealth heads of government meeting on that will see a series of events take place over the next few days.

Journalist and reparations campaigner Laura Trevelyan spoke to People about how in the Caribbean Charles is seen as “the symbol of Britain’s entangled past with that region.”

She added that Charles himself is “personally” a symbol of that entanged past, “because the royal family at the inception of slavery endorsed it through the East African Company.”
But there won’t be any apology from Charles for the horrors of slavery. The king is constitutionally bound to follow government policy and at the moment the policy is that there will be no apology.
Back in 2011 Queen Elizabeth famously came the closest the royals have come to an apology for British atrocities in Ireland (without actually going so far as to apologize.)
At a state banquet in Dublin Castle she said, “It is a sad and regrettable reality that through history our islands have experienced more than their fair share of heartache, turbulence and loss.
“With the benefit of historical hindsight we can all see things which we wish had been done differently, or not at all,” she went on.
She added, “To all those who have suffered as a consequence of our troubled past I extend my sincere thoughts and deep sympathy.”
