Judi Dench is opening up about a heartfelt interaction she shared with Robin Williams during her late husband’s battle with lung cancer.
According to People magazine, Dench recently expanded upon a personal episode that happened roughly 30 years ago, when she and her husband, Michael Williams, ran into Williams while the couple were staying at their friend Billy Connolly’s Scotland residence.
“One evening there was a big party in the woods with a ceilidh and a bonfire,” Dench wrote in her forthcoming memoir, Is It Too Late to Make a Run For It?
“Michael was very ill at the time and I could see him flagging, so we said our good nights and began walking up this very steep hill,” Dench continued.
“Robin Williams appeared beside us and offered to help, but Michael said he could manage,” the actress added. “And Robin said, ‘Well, I think I’ll ride shotgun anyway’, which was such a lovely thing to say. I’ve often thought about that moment — Robin’s sensitivity and understanding, just offering to be there, gently supportive, without imposing himself.”
Elsewhere in her book, Dench also recalled her experiences meeting several other notable entertainment personalities in addition to Williams, including Sidney Poitier and Sophia Loren.
She also candidly addressed how much she missed her husband Michael, who died in 2001 at the age of 65.
“I still miss him,” Dench said of Williams. “Even now, 25 years on, I imagine he’s going to walk in through the front door.”
Dench also told People about the experiences of writing about her personal life, including her early childhood experiences.
“I’ve been amazed at how much I remember from my childhood,” Dench said. “Ask me what I did yesterday and I couldn’t tell you, but I can recount in vivid detail what I did over 80 years ago — the holidays, the friendships and the mischief I got up to at school.”
