Allen breaks Jim Kelly’s passing record; Bills defense excels against third-string Ravens QB ...Middle East

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — The Buffalo Bills are looking towards next Monday’s game against the Minnesota Vikings after having no trouble defeating the Baltimore Ravens, led by a third-string quarterback.

With Sunday’s 36-10 win, the Bills have improved to 6-1 and remain on top of the AFC East division. During the fourth quarter of the game, Josh Allen became the Bills’ all-time leader in touchdown passes, breaking Jim Kelly’s record with an 11-yard pass completion to receiver DJ Moore. Allen earned 259 career touchdown passes in just 150 games, while Kelly got his 258 touchdown passes in 177 appearances.

The Bills defense was another bright spot, after struggling during multiple games this season. Buffalo caused three turnovers and picked up four sacks. What’s more, they only allowed 10 first downs and 144 total yards. However, that was against Ravens third-string quarterback Joe Fagnano, rather than two-time MVP Lamar Jackson.

After missing three games for a high ankle sprain, Jackson took the field on Sunday, only to suffer a thumb injury during the Ravens’ first offensive snap of the game. Ravens coach Jesse Minter said Jackson will need surgery and is going back to being on injured reserve.

No such thing as an ugly win (Ian Mills)

Yes, the Bills offense looked sluggish in the first half, and yes, they capitalized on playing an undrafted rookie quarterback, UConn graduate Joe Fignano.

But it all amounts to the same. It’s a 36-10 win, and nobody should be apologizing for it, especially considering the Bills scored on three of their final four drives of this contest.

“I couldn’t tell you our second half splits, but that second half is who we want to be,” Allen said.

And that guy, Josh Allen, threw a pair of touchdowns in this one, surpassing Jim Kelly, the all-time great for the most career passing scores in Bill’s history.

“That’s the goal, right? To go out there and be the best quarterback that you can be. To go out there and play good football and I. Again, we’ve done that for quite some time now. We had to continue to do that and find a way to be better,” Allen said.

That’s the takeaway from this. The Bills’ defense had the best output of the year, even if it came against a third-string quarterback.

“Most likely, he probably didn’t practice for us or plan for us and wasn’t really expecting to play, so just had to take advantage of that,” said Bills linebacker Bradley Chubb.

The Bills’ 6-1 record is the best start ever for a rookie head coach. So the concept of an ugly win, you can throw it out the window.

“It shouldn’t matter who’s on the other sideline, who’s playing quarterback, any of that. And then I thought they finished, and I’m really proud of how they played,” said Head Coach Joe Brady.

Next, the Bills look toward another 6-1 team, the Minnesota Vikings, whose offense is led by quarterback Kyler Murray.
