Most of us think about hair color in terms of the hair itself—covering grays, adding dimension or simply trying something new. But the shade you choose also changes how light reflects back onto your face.

The right hair color can brighten your complexion and make skin look more even. The wrong one can leave you looking a little washed out, even when nothing about your skincare routine has changed.

That effect tends to become more noticeable with age. Natural hair color softens and loses pigment over time, and skin tone shifts along with it. A shade that flattered you at 30 may be different at 50 or 60, and it isn’t always obvious why. Many people respond by going darker to cover grays or lighter to blend them, without thinking much about tone. That’s often where the problem starts.

Chase Kusero, a celebrity colorist and co-founder of IGK Hair Care who has worked with Paris Hilton and Ciara, has a simple fix for clients who want more glow from their color. It doesn’t require a dramatic transformation or a big commitment. It’s mostly about choosing the right temperature for your shade and placing it where it counts.

Here’s the change he suggests asking your colorist for, plus how to make it last between appointments.

Why Warm Blonde Tones Can Brighten Your Complexion

The technique comes down to warmth. “Warm blondes soften features and brighten the complexion,” Kusero has previously told Parade.

Cool, ashy blondes can drain color from the face for some people, especially as skin loses some of its natural warmth. Honey and golden hues work differently. They reflect light in a way that brings radiance back to the skin and softens the overall effect.

Jennifer Aniston’s warm honey highlights are a good reference point if you want to show your colorist what you mean.

How To Ask Your Colorist for ‘Warm Blonde’ Color

Ask for face-framing honey highlights blended into a soft golden base. Placement matters here. Brightness concentrated around the face gives a natural lift, similar to what contouring does with makeup, while the blended base keeps the color from looking streaky.

If you’d rather go softer, balayage is another option. The hand-painted technique creates a gradual fade with no harsh lines and a less obvious grow-out. “Subtle balayage with buttery blonde ribbons adds dimension and softness,” Kusero said. Ciara’s golden balayage is a good example of how the look plays off the contours of the face and adds warmth to the complexion.

How Brunettes Can Get the Same Brightening Effect

Warm tones aren’t only for blondes. For brunettes, celebrity colorist and salon owner Rita Hazan has suggested asking your colorist to layer warm cinnamon or amber undertones through the mid-lengths and ends. Instead of chunky highlights or a dramatic shift, the result is a seamless, light-reflecting finish that adds life to hair.

“Shine and tone are key as hair matures,” Hazan previously told Parade. To keep that glow going between salon visits, she recommended Glaze Supergloss to boost shine and revive color. Just steer clear of anything too golden or red, since that’s where brown shades can turn brassy.

Why a Shadow Root Makes Warm Tones Easier To Maintain

For a look that grows out gracefully, Kusero pointed to Michelle Pfeiffer’s color as a model. Her slightly deeper shadow root melts into warm, golden mid-lengths, which he said creates dimension without harsh lines and keeps the overall effect natural. The bonus is practical. A softer root means you won’t need touch-ups as often.

How To Keep Warm Blonde Hair Shiny Between Appointments

Shine is what makes warm tones stand out, so aftercare matters. To lock in a glossy finish, Kusero recommended IGK Expensive Clear Gloss Top Coat, from the brand he co-founded, along with a hydrating hair serum to help extend the life of your color.

The takeaway is simple. You don’t need a dramatic color change to look brighter. A warmer tone, smart placement and a little shine can do most of the work.
