HEAP applications open

New York’s Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) opens on Monday, offering financial help for heating bills. Most households receiving HEAP get it automatically because they are enrolled in other assistance programs like SNAP, and the Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance prepares these payments ahead of time.

According to Gov. Kathy Hochul’s Office, more than 1.1 million low- and middle-income households and older adults are expected to get automatic payments once the program opens. Households not automatically enrolled can start applying Nov. 2. The benefit amounts depend on income, household size, heating source, and whether the household includes a vulnerable member.

Applications are accepted at local departments of social services and can be submitted online, by mail, or in person. More information and applications are available here. Older adults needing help can contact their local office for the aging or the NY Connects helpline at 1-800-342-9871. Learn more in this story.

Curbside leaf pickup begins in Rochester

November has arrived, and the City of Rochester’s annual leaf collection campaign begins on Monday. Crews will begin picking up leaves on the city’s southwest side, before moving to other neighborhoods later in the month. You can see when crews will be in your neighborhood using this interactive map.

In total, the city has around 70,000 public trees. Each fall, the city’s Department of Environmental Services works with residents to collect leaves, keep streets clear, and turn the collected leaves into compost. The city is asking residents to help by raking leaves between the sidewalk and curb, keeping leaves out of the street and sidewalks, and keeping leaves separate from branches and other yard waste. Crews are also asking people to move their parked cars if they’re blocking a leaf pile.

If crews came to your area but missed your leaf pile, you can call 311 to schedule a pickup. Residents can also compost leaves in their backyards.

Irondequoit Bay Outlet Bridge set to reopen

The boating season is over, and that means that the Irondequoit Bay Outlet Bridge is reopening to traffic. The bridge will swing open by 3 p.m. on Monday.

The bridge spans between Culver and Lake roads. Every year, the bridge remains closed for seven months so boaters can access the north end of Irondequoit Bay. The bridge will remain open until Thursday, April 1, marking the start of the boating season.
