46 Years Ago Today, Willie Nelson Hit No. 1 With a Song He Wrote on an Airplane Without a Melody ...Saudi Arabia

News by : (Parade) -

Willie Nelson has spent so much of his life on the road that one of his signature songs can seem almost inevitable. Its actual origin was considerably more spontaneous.

While traveling by plane during the making of the 1980 movie Honeysuckle Rose, Nelson was asked to write a song about touring. Before the flight was over, he had the words to “On the Road Again.” He didn’t even have a melody yet.

Months later, Nelson finally put music to those words and recorded the song for the film. Forty-six years ago this week, “On the Road Again” completed its unlikely journey from an idea tossed out on an airplane to the No. 1 country song in America.

How Did Willie Nelson Write ‘On the Road Again’?

Nelson was starring in Honeysuckle Rose, his first leading movie role, when director Jerry Schatzberg and executive producer Sydney Pollack approached him with a request. They needed a song about touring that could be used in the film.

According to Tom Roland’s “Billboard Book of Number One Country Hits,” the idea came up while Nelson was flying with Pollack and Schatzberg. Nelson immediately began working on it, writing out what Roland describes as a “perfect four-line chorus” on the nearest available paper.

Nelson later admitted that he was partly showing off.

“Even if I had already thought up the song before I got on the plane, I wouldn’t have admitted it to Sydney and Jerry,” Nelson wrote in his autobiography, according to Roland. “I liked seeing the surprise in their faces.”

But Nelson also revealed something surprising about his impromptu composition: The tune didn’t exist yet.

“The fact is, it had never occurred to me until I said those first four words,” he wrote.

The song remained without a melody for several months. Nelson finally completed it while Honeysuckle Rose was being filmed.

Willie Nelson Recorded ‘On the Road Again’ Live

Honeysuckle Rose starred Nelson as Buck Bonham, a country musician struggling to balance life on tour with his family. The production gave Nelson an unusual opportunity to record the song in an environment that matched its subject matter.

Rather than creating the familiar recording entirely in a studio, Nelson performed “On the Road Again” multiple times during live performances filmed for the movie. The version ultimately chosen for the single and soundtrack was recorded during an engagement at Austin’s Soap Creek Saloon.

The recording retained the energy of a live performance, right down to the audience response, while its distinctive rhythm evoked the sound of a train rolling down the tracks.

The song was released as a single in August 1980 and entered Billboard’s country chart at No. 58 on Aug. 30. Ten weeks later, it reached the top.

‘On the Road Again’ Became a No. 1 Hit

In November 1980, “On the Road Again” hit No. 1 on Nov. 2, topping Billboard’s country chart for the week ending Nov. 8, becoming Nelson’s ninth No. 1 country hit overall and his sixth as a solo artist.

Its appeal extended well beyond country radio. “On the Road Again” climbed to No. 20 on the Billboard Hot 100, making it Nelson’s biggest pop hit up to that point, and reached No. 7 on the Adult Contemporary chart.

The song also earned Nelson the Grammy Award for Best Country Song and received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song. Decades later, it was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2011.

Rolling Stone eventually included “On the Road Again” among its 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, recalling the story of Nelson quickly writing the lyrics after the filmmakers asked him for a song about life on tour.

The title also proved remarkably appropriate for the man who wrote it. “On the Road Again” became one of Nelson’s signature songs, following him through decades of touring and countless performances. And according to Roland, Nelson’s relationship with the road hasn’t always been quite as uncomplicated as his famous chorus makes it sound.

“After every tour I swear it’ll be my last,” Nelson once said. “But after I’m home for a couple days, I’m ready to go back on the road.”
