Mothers on Chicago’s Far South Side have fewer options for maternity care following the stoppage of labor and delivery services at Roseland Hospital.
A report previously obtained by NBC 5 and circulated by hospital administrators outlined the severe financial pressures facing the hospital and said the change would take effect Oct. 31. Officials said the hospital could no longer afford to operate a full maternity unit.
“We can’t put the whole entire hospital at risk just for one department,” a high-level hospital administrator previously said. “That’s where we’re at now.”
The report said Roseland Hospital is not abandoning maternal health altogether, as an obstetrics clinic will continue to operate within the facility. Hospital administrators have called on the state to assist in expanding care for high-risk maternal patients at an inpatient facility called the “Maryville New Mom’s Home.”
Roseland Hospital is one of 10 hospitals on Chicago’s South Side or in the south suburbs to close a maternity ward in the past seven years.
On Saturday night, one woman made an emotional plea to keep maternity care close to home.
“Anybody that has a child should understand and realize that, you were there in that labor room, you were there,” she said. “It’s needed. It’s needed. We don’t need to have to go away somewhere else to have our children be born.”
The move comes as several other local hospitals have also ended inpatient maternity care.
Inpatient labor and delivery units closed at Resurrection Hospital on Chicago’s Northwest Side, St Joseph’s Hospital in Joliet and Mercy Medical Center in Aurora on Oct. 1
All three hospitals are owned by a for-profit California company called Prime Healthcare, which has cited financial pressures and a declining birthrate in Will County as reasons for the cutbacks.
