Angelina Jolie was set to play Cleopatra VII on-screen, and “it was going to be wild.”
That’s according to Martin Scorsese, who recently sat down with his celebrity daughter Francesca Scorsese to talk filmmaking, creative instincts and the experiences that shape their work.
With an Oscar-winning name like Jolie, it’s hard to believe she hasn’t yet worked with the auteur behind GoodFellas, Taxi Driver and The Departed. But it almost happened.
Key word here is “almost,” and it traces back to 2014. Per Variety, that’s when Sony emails were hacked by a group that hoped Seth Rogen‘s comedy The Interview — which centered on fictional assassination attempt of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un — would not be released by the studio.
“We were gonna do Cleopatra at one point, and then they made fun of [Kim Jong Un], and he got mad and blew up everybody at Columbia,” Martin, 83, told Francesca, 26, in the first episode of the Tribeca original series Crafty. “Seth Rogen, right? And then he got mad, and [it] ruined Cleopatra.”
Variety also reported on Friday, October 30 that the resulting hack exposed thousands of emails, including ones from producer Scott Rudin to Sony’s Amy Pascal calling Jolie “a minimally talented spoiled brat.”
Charli XCX to Cameo in Martin Scorsese’s New Film
Charli XCX’s Music, Fashion, Film album paid homage to Martin Scorsese by featuring him on the cover. Now, the director is returning the favor.
Earlier this month, Variety reported that the hyperpop pioneer is set to make a cameo in Scorsese’s upcoming gothic thriller What Happens at Night, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence.
Based on Peter Cameron’s novel, the film follows a married American couple who travel to a remote European town to adopt a baby, only to realize they may not know each other as well as they thought. Find out more here.
