Alabama’s women’s tennis team is set to attend the 38th annual Roberta Alison Fall Classic. The Fall Classic began Friday and run through Saturday, with a mix of singles and doubles happening all weekend.
A new face
Over the summer, The University of Alabama signed assistant coach Gerhard Gruindelingh.
Gruindelingh had previously been the assistant coach at Duke University from 2023-2026. He assisted in leading the Blue Devils to three consecutive NCAA tournaments.
“He’s very composed and I think the girls are really enjoying his coaching,” said head coach Jonatan Berhane when asked about the addition of Gruindeling.
Keep the ball rolling
This is the 38th annual Roberta Alison Fall Classic, and it gets its namesake from a very influential woman in women’s tennis: Roberta Alison.
Roberta Alison was encouraged to join the Crimson Tide’s men’s tennis team by then head coach Jason Morton in 1963. She was the first woman to play on a men’s varsity team in the SEC, helping to lead the way for women in collegiate sports.
“This is something I promised her (Jenny Mainz) when she retired that I was going to maintain and keep this tournament as long as I’m here,” Berhane said.
“Ready to play”
Coach Jonatan Berhane said that his girls were “ready to play” in this weekend’s tournament.
Representing the Crimson Tide this weekend are junior Korina Roso, freshman Yleymi Muelle and sophomore Addison Bowman.
Last year, Bowman competed at the Roberta Alison Fall Classic. She took home a win in all three doubles rounds with her partner, sophomore Amina Salibayeva. Bowman is looking to expand her victories this weekend.
The Classic will be held at the Roberta Alison Baumgardner Tennis Facility in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, and began at 10 a.m. CT on Friday.
