SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — Halloween is bringing more than just tricks and treats this year. As costumes and decorations become more expensive, some Santa Barbara shoppers are finding creative ways to celebrate while keeping costs down.
At World of Magic in Santa Barbara, the final days before Halloween are bringing a mix of classic characters, pop-culture favorites and nostalgic looks.
The store's owner says Y2K-inspired costumes are helping shape this year's trends, with Michael Jackson and Dolly Parton among the popular choices.
Characters from movies like Toy Story, Shrek and Coraline are also getting extra attention.
But while costume options are plentiful, some shoppers say the prices can add up.
“Everything's marked up. Like, I looked at a costume that I wanted and it was $84. And I said, you know what? Do I have this in my closet?” said Vivian Storm, a Santa Barbara resident.
According to the National Retail Federation, Americans are expected to spend a record $13.5 billion on Halloween this year. The average consumer plans to spend about $115 on costumes, candy and decorations.
Some shoppers are turning to homemade costumes and reusing items they already own as a way to save money while also reducing waste.
“I frantically looked in our closet to see what we have and made some clown hats,” said Gabrielle Chiarello, who was visiting from San Francisco.
Others are putting together costumes one piece at a time.
Sophie Ward, who lives in Santa Barbara, said she plans to dress as Frodo from The Lord of the Rings, using pieces she already has and adding affordable accessories.
When asked how much one piece of her costume cost, Ward said, “$15.”
The owner of World of Magic says the store offers a range of price points as shoppers navigate rising costs.
“We have price points for everybody. In total, I think the spending is a little lower this year. A lot of things have been more expensive,” said Tradyn Foley, the store's Halloween owner.
For some local businesses, Halloween costumes are also an opportunity to build connections with customers and employees.
At American Riviera Bank, dressing up for Halloween has become a way to show personality and strengthen community relationships.
“It keeps our customers and it brings more people over to us. They talk about us. I'm like, oh yeah, you guys dressed up for Halloween? Or do you guys do this?” said Adriana Corona of American Riviera Bank.
Whether store-bought or homemade, Santa Barbara shoppers are finding their own ways to celebrate Halloween while making their money go further.
