The star did so while making an appearance at the 20th Anniversary Gala for The Care & Cure Institute (C&CI), which took place on Thursday, Oct. 29. The institute “seeks to improve the lives of children living with epilepsy by financing the final, fellowship stage of medical training for pediatric epilepsy specialists, called epileptologists.” These efforts “will increase access to treatments and doctors and create a larger pediatric epileptologist network in order to achieve the most optimal health outcomes for children with epilepsy.”
Affleck was honored for his philanthropy while at the event — which included a $100,000 donation he made during the gala — and also took the stage to deliver a speech.
“Epilepsy isn’t abstract to me,” Affleck said during his onstage comments to the crowd, according to People. “I’ve watched people I care about deal with it, and I’ve seen how much it matters when a family can get in front of the right doctor quickly.”
“Spending time at UCLA with the physicians doing this work was humbling,” he continued. “These are specialists who chose to dedicate their careers to kids, and the Care & Cure Institute is making sure there are more of them.”
The event raised almost $2 million, prompting Affleck to add, “Tonight I’m saying thank you for giving and giving generously. You have really changed lives.”
“Here’s the thing. None of us get to choose whether it’s our child or someone else’s child who gets sick. That’s the truth,” he said. “But all of us get to choose what we’re going to do about the children who do get sick. Twenty years ago you couldn’t find enough doctors for your kids so you made more, and because you did, more than 350,000 children have been cared for by doctors you helped train.
