Daytime Emmy nominee Jasmine Burke has opened up about her journey to join daytime’s newest soap opera, Beyond the Gates, and the responsibility she feels to portray June Hughes.
Ahead of the 53rd Annual Daytime Emmys, Burke was interviewed by Ronda Racha Penrice for Gold Derby, where she discussed learning of her nomination, her time on Making the Band, and the importance of her role as June on the soap opera.
During the conversation, Burke was asked how she came to be a part of the first new soap opera to be greenlit in over 25 years. “Sheila Ducksworth, our visionary leader [and executive producer], had all these stories in her heart.”
The actress shared how for Ducksworth and the other creatives behind the scenes, June was considered a very “pivotal” role and one that they knew they “had to have a special actor to be able to bring her to life and tell this story.”
Before working on Beyond the Gates, Burke is best known for her role of Dr. Christie Johnson on the Bounce TV prime time soap opera Saints & Sinners. Burke shared, “That was my first time being in a lead role on a television series.” She explained that, despite Saints & Sinners’ popularity, due to its low ratings, she felt that nobody had seen the series.
So it completely surprised Burke to find out that one of the reasons she booked the part of June was because Ducksworth had been a fan and had seen her work on the Bounce TV series: “So when this character of June came up, they knew they wanted a very powerful, strong actress, and she called me for the role.”
Since joining Beyond the Gates, Burke has been involved in some meaty storylines as June joined the series as a member of the unhoused community, has worked her way back into the lives of her friends and family, and has become an important member of the Fairmount Crest community.
