SANTA YNEZ VALLEY, Calif. (KEYT) – Another piece of a multi-phase trail project has opened in the Santa Ynez Valley.
It is the newest addition to the Carina Dee Velazquez Memorial Path along Refugio Road.
It was named in honor of the 15-year-old Santa Ynez Valley High student who in 2015 was struck and killed by a vehicle while walking across Highway 246 near Refugio Road after an after-school activity, just one day shy of her 16th birthday.
Originally the project started nearby in front of the school.
The first work took place in 2022.
Santa Ynez Valley Christian School is located at 891 N Refugio Rd, Santa Ynez, where the newest section has been opened.
The goal of the project is to restore pedestrian, bicycle and equestrian access along the “existing roadside trail” route between Los Olivos and the Santa Ynez River.
The newly completed section of trail connects Mission Drive (Highway 226) to Homestead Lane and is well distance from the street.
It leaves room for equestrian riding nearby and the walkway is designed for bikes and foot traffic. That includes those who are mobility challenged.
This trail was created through a community partnership project between the Santa Barbara County Public Works Department, the Santa Barbara Bucket Brigade and Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians.
Third District Supervisor Joan Hartman has been part of the coordination planning that brought in the Santa Barbara Bucket Brigade which was formed after the Montecito debris flow. It has many volunteers and brings a grassroots plan to the project.
Funding has come from the county of Santa Barbara, the Chumash Foundation and also from a settlement to the Air Pollution Control District that could be used for this type of work.
Work on this section took place in September and it covers about a quarter of a mile.
