A former “Jeopardy!” champion is facing serious new criminal charges, less than a year after his first arrest.
Philip Joseph “Joey” DeSena, 44, was arrested on Friday, Oct. 23, in Wake County, North Carolina, and charged with 10 felony counts of second-degree sexual exploitation of a minor, according to court records. Investigators say the charges stem from the alleged possession of child sexual abuse images and videos.
According to arrest warrants cited by WRAL, DeSena allegedly duplicated multiple image and video files depicting children in sexually explicit situations. The children shown were estimated to be between 7 and 15 years old. The warrants, which were issued on Oct. 22, state that the alleged offenses took place on Nov. 19, 2025.
DeSena was booked into the Wake County Jail and denied bond during an initial court hearing on Monday, Oct. 26. According to Fox News Digital, a judge noted that DeSena allegedly possessed the material while he was on probation for a separate crime. He is scheduled to return to court on the new charges in November.
The arrest marks DeSena’s second run-in with the law in less than a year. On Dec. 1, 2025, he was arrested on two counts of felony secret peeping.
DeSena pleaded guilty to the two peeping charges on July 27, 2026. He was sentenced to 60 months of probation and ordered to complete 100 hours of community service, as well as undergo a mental health evaluation with a psychologist who specializes in psychosexual treatment, TMZ reports. His latest arrest came roughly three months after that conviction.
Before his legal troubles, DeSena was best known to viewers for his run on “Jeopardy!” The Raleigh-based development engineer won two episodes of the quiz show in November 2024, taking home a total of $44,698.
He returned to the show in January 2025 to compete in its Champions Wildcard tournament, a competition for past winners, where he earned an additional $10,000, according to WRAL. He made it to the semifinals before being eliminated.
