The world was shocked when it was announced three years ago on this day that Matthew Perry passed away.

Best known for his role as Chandler Bing in the sitcom Friends, Perry was found unresponsive in his Jacuzzi in his Pacific Palisades home on Oct. 28, 2023, and was pronounced dead that same afternoon.

A little over a month after his death, the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner released in a statement his death had occurred due to acute effects of ketamine, as well as the effects of buprenorphine, drowning and coronary artery disease. The actor, who passed when he was 54, was receiving ketamine-assisted psychotherapy sessions to treat anxiety. His last known session occurred the week before his death. However, the report stated that the ketamine in his system at death could not be from that infusion, since ketamine’s half-life is three to four hours or less.

In May 2024, the LAPD opened an investigation to determine how Perry obtained the high dose of ketamine that caused his death. Later that summer, indictments and criminal charges were filed against five individuals: Perry’s personal assistant, Kenneth Iwamasa; two physicians, Mark Chavez and Salvador Plasencia; TV director Erik Fleming and Jasveen Sangha, known as the “Ketamine Queen”, the latter two being alleged drug dealers.

All five people involved pleaded guilty and are currently serving their sentences, while Sangha had her bail revoked. The Ketamine Queen gained national attention after the death of Perry and prosecutors alleged that she operated a drug distribution network from her North Hollywood home for several years. Since August 2024, she has been held at a federal prison, where she will be for the next 15 years.

A documentary about Perry’s life, career, public advocacy and long battle with substance abuse was released to Netflix on Tuesday, the day of his three-year death anniversary. Directed by Mary Robinson, the three-episode docuseries features rare interviews from the actor’s sister, Mia Perry Bowick, and details on how he spent upwards of $7 million trying to get sober, his struggle with tremors and withdrawal during later seasons of Friends, and his complex experience with ketamine treatments.

Perry’s addiction started when he was just 14 years old, where he drank a bottle of alcohol for the first time and felt like he “was in heaven.” When he was 27, Perry got into a jet ski accident and was prescribed Vicodin, noting the “incredible euphoria” he felt after taking the pain medicine. After years of battling with drugs and alcoholism, Perry achieved long-term sobriety in early 2021 following a near-death medical emergency in 2018 when his colon burst from opioid misuse. He wrote in his 2022 memoir, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing: A Memoir, that he “should be dead” because of his addiction. In addition, Perry also turned his personal battle with substance use disorder into a lifelong mission of public advocacy, legislative lobbying and philanthropic support for recovery.

The official Matthew Perry Foundation that was established after his death still continues his legacy. Managed via the National Philanthropic Trust, the organization funds medication fellowships, issues grassroots recovery grants to local nonprofits and hosts multiple events throughout the year to raise awareness on addiction.

“When I die, I don’t want Friends to be the first thing that’s mentioned,” he said in a 2022 interview on the Q with Tom Power podcast. “I want [helping people] to be the first thing that’s mentioned, and I’m gonna live the rest of my life proving that.”

All three episodes of The One About Matthew Perry are out now on Netflix.
