Russell Brand has officially taken the stand in his high-profile criminal court case this Wednesday in London, denying all of the accusation made against him related to sexual assault, according to Variety.
In an unusual development for the legal proceedings, Brand also revealed that he was unable to convince anyone to testify on his behalf.
During the case, Brand’s lawyer, Ian Winter KC, called Brand to the stand as the first witness in his defense. Winter started by asking the actor if he had committed each of the individual offenses he was being accused of, leading Brand to reply, “No,” to each allegation.
As a consequence of the newfound notoriety brought on the trial, Brand also said that he was unable to find anyone with knowledge about his past behavior to testify in court.
“My entire life has been consumed by these allegations,” Brand said to the Southwark Crown Court. “I have devoted myself to these matters.”
Expanding upon the allegations, Brand said the Channel 4 documentary detailing his alleged behavior was “devastating.” Because of the accusations, he also claimed that he was unable to visit his sick son in the hospital, directly blaming the allegations brought about in the documentary.
“The reason given by Great Ormond Street Hospital when my son was receiving open heart surgery and subsequent treatment was due to the material published,” he said.
Right now, Brand is facing seven charges, including one count of attempted indecent assault, three counts of rape and three counts of sexual assault.
The case also involves six female plaintiffs, all of whom have requested to remain anonymous, with the alleged incidents occurring from 1999 to 2009.
In front of the courthouse this Wednesday, Brand went into further detail about the trial, telling reporters, “Due to the circumstances of today, I think it would be inappropriate for me to say anything other than I am very grateful that today’s a day for truth and justice and we are blessed that as yet we have a system that can accommodate such things.”
