Caleb Wilson’s Best Defensive Game? Claxton Return? & Other Bulls Bullets ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

Good morning, Bulls fans.

Has the 2026-27 NBA season lived up to expectations so far? I mean, I guess we knew the Bulls would be bad this season, but are we still a little disappointed?

I know I am.

But there’s always some good that comes from looking for the silver lining and trying to find the bright side. And maybe that’s what we can do today.

Let’s start with Caleb Wilson’s defensive performance last night, and maybe, just maybe, a potential answer to some of our rebounding woes.

Let’s talk Bulls basketball.

Caleb Wilson. Mandatory Credit: Winslow Townson-Imagn Images Among all the poor possessions we have seen from the Bulls through their one win and three losses, at least the Caleb Wilson show has looked as good as advertised. His offensive highlights have shown plenty of promise and grabbed headlines. They’ve also proved that he can be effective off the ball while still creating for himself. Yes, some consistency would go a long way, but so would having a better team around him. That’s all part of the growth. However, when we drafted him, we knew his offensive game would be a work in progress. But he was also expected to be a two-way talent, using his athleticism and lateral quickness to become a good defender both in the paint and on the perimeter. In the first few games, we didn’t really see that. He was getting cooked by everyone from Kawhi Leonard to Dillon Brooks, and it seemed like his defense would also be a work in progress. But against the Celtics last night, he did a really good job on Jayson Tatum. Ignoring the near ankle-breaker Caleb was subjected to, he slowed down the All-NBA-caliber forward. When Tatum was guarded by any other Bulls player, he scored 21 points on 6-of-12 shooting. When he was guarded by Caleb Wilson, he scored just 2 points on 1-of-5 shooting.

— Bulls on CHSN (@CHSN_Bulls) October 26, 2026 Small sample size, sure. But that sort of defense on the wing is exactly what we were looking for. And the flashes are starting to show up on the stat sheet, too, with Wilson becoming the second-fastest player in Bulls history to record 5+ steals and 5+ blocks, trailing only former Defensive Player of the Year Michael Jordan. Now, when the rest of the Bulls are giving up a league-worst 129.5 points per game, Caleb stopping a possession here or there doesn’t exactly jump off the stat sheet. But we see it. The eye test is starting to tell a different story.

We obviously spoke about the abysmal shooting, which apparently isn’t going anywhere because Tiago Splitter is willing to live and die by that shot. And then we have the underwhelming Matas Buzelis “breakout, off-the-leash” season, which honestly deserves its own post.

— Boston Celtics (@celtics) October 27, 2026 But last night, we saw one more problem: rebounding. If the Bulls want to take all those low-percentage shots, they need the other four guys crashing the glass and creating extra possessions for the team. And that’s not happening with the Bulls ranking in the bottom six in opponent rebounds per game. You can really feel the lack of big-man depth on this roster, and honestly, that should be enough of a reason to just give Tobe Awaka more of a run. At least until Nic Claxton returns. And that Claxton return could not come soon enough. Not necessarily to start over Jalen Smith, or even fix the rebounding problem as a whole, but more to take Zach Collins out of the rotation.

According to Joe Cowley, “Nic Claxton worked out individually this morning in Boston and the hope is he can start practicing with the team next week.”

Splitter says Nic Claxton won’t fix Bulls’ rebounding:“Everybody’s gotta be better. Our young guys are gonna get better. Caleb’s gotta be better. Matas’ gotta be better. Josh, everyone… We don’t have a 7’3 guy that’s gonna clean the whole paint. It’s gotta be a team effort.”

— Gavin Dorsey (@gjdorsey7) October 25, 2026 Hopefully, at full strength, this team starts playing the way Tiago Splitter envisions, because these losses haven’t even been competitive.
