BROCKPORT, N.Y. — SUNY Brockport has seen its highest enrollment since 2018, with numbers up 26% in the last four years.

Abigail Maldonado, a first-year student from Long Island, said she chose SUNY because of the support it provides both financially and academically.

“Especially a lot of my teachers in high school really emphasized how SUNY’s are a smart choice because you save so much money,” Maldonado said.

Enrollment up 3 years straight

SUNY has registered more students statewide every year for three straight years, according to Will Schwartz, SUNY vice chancellor for government relations. Enrollment has increased from 367,538 to 387,445 students.

“It’s the first time we’ve seen three consecutive years of enrollment increases in almost 20 years,” Schwartz said.

Cost and curb appeal

Dr. Melinda Treadwell, president of SUNY Geneseo, said families are focused on whether college makes sense financially.

“It’s about prevailing in the conversations with families when they’re thinking first and foremost – does it make sense to to go to college?” Treadwell said.

Treadwell also said the campus environment plays a role. “And when they come to campus it’s beautiful,” Treadwell said.

Cost remains a major factor for families, according to Sara Kelly, vice president of enrollment management at SUNY Brockport.

“Of course, yeah. They’re concerned. They want to make sure they can afford college that they can support their student,” Kelly said. “That their student is going to leave and be able to get a job in a career that they love,” Kelly said.

11th lowest public system tuition

SUNY’s tuition is the 11th lowest in the country, and more than half of SUNY students go tuition-free because of grants and state aid. About 25,000 SUNY students receive the Excelsior Scholarship, which covers the $7,000 tuition.

The total enrollment at SUNY Brockport is 8,100. In the last 10 years, 26 colleges have closed in New York, with nine closures since COVID because of financial and enrollment challenges.
