Christy Carlson Romano has been airing out behind-the-scenes secrets from her time on Even Stevens, and reveals Shia LaBeouf had his own “trash-talking” feud against Hilary Duff.
LaBeouf played the leading role in Even Stevens since its inception in the early 2000s, and it was his big breakthrough role. Romano appeared on a recent episode of “The Joe Vulpis Podcast” and was asked if they ever had tension with Nickelodeon stars.
As many know, Nickelodeon and Disney Channel were often seen as rivals during the height of their popular series throughout the 2000s. The former child star admits that Disney actor “never really saw” anyone from Nickelodeon, and if there was competition, it was more “within the network than we were outside of the network.”
She recalls a majority of the stars coming together for special projects like “Circle of Stars,” a music video created for The Lion King. It was those types of projects that were the rare few moments when stars from other series crossed paths, but “everyone’s schedules never lined up.” Romano added that they were more “competitive in the ratings.”
When it come to LaBeouf, Romano wasn’t shy to reveal that her co-star developed his own on-sided drama.
“I think Shia was definitely beefing with Hilary. Hilary had no clue about that. I’m sure she was doing her own thing, but he would always be kind of trash-talking Lizzie McGuire,” she explained.
Lizzie McGuire aired only one year after Even Stevens and quickly climbed the ranks to become one of Disney Channel’s top teen sitcoms of the era. It also made Duff a household name, which helped further push her growing career as a child star. Both series also ended only a year apart.
According to Romano, she would always tell LaBeouf that they “don’t know anything about them” to create a feud. She believes LaBeouf developed the one-sided feud because of his competitive nature and his need to make sure Even Stevens did well.
He was “very competitive… He had to be the number one show, because I think like his life depended on that show doing well. He had a rough upbringing and I think he needed that show to do well for him.”
LaBeouf was reported to have had a difficult childhood before filming the Disney Channel series, involving his parents’ divorce and his father’s drug and alcohol addiction. When he was cast in Even Stevens, his father became his on-set guardian, and he recalls being subjected to abuse.
Romano has previously commented that she hasn’t maintained a close relationship with her co-star since the series. Neither LaBeouf nor Duff has commented on Romano’s feud claims.
