ROCHESTER, N.Y. — New York State and local police are boosting their enforcement on roads now through Halloween, which is considered one of the deadliest nights of the year for pedestrian deaths.
Police will be looking for impaired, speeding, or reckless drivers. Across the nation, at least 377 people were killed in crashes on Halloween night involving an impaired or drunk driver from 2019 to 2024, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
During last year’s crackdown, police issued over 44,500 citations, including 1,210 for impaired driving and 8,701 for speeding, according to the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee. The committee says drivers can expect sobriety checkpoints and additional DWI patrols on the roads.
State leaders are reminding drivers to watch out for trick-or-treaters on Saturday, especially those wearing dark clothing, and to make a plan to get home safely for those planning to drink at Halloween events. This is one of the state’s several traffic safety crackdown periods: The others being the Super Bowl, St. Patrick’s Day, Independence Day, late summer leading up to Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and mid-December through Christmas and New Year’s.

Pedestrian deaths on Halloween are 43% higher compared to any other night, according to a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association that looked at 42 years of data. The study also found that children between the ages of 4 and 8 are 10 times more likely to be hit by a car on Halloween than on any other night.
