Actor Sebastian Stan is opening up about how he was cast as one of his most iconic roles, MCU’s Bucky Barnes, also known as The Winter Soldier.
During an October 2026 interview with GQ, Stan explained that he had originally auditioned to play Steve Rogers for the 2011 film, Captain America: The First Avenger. The role ultimately went to Chris Evans.
Stan also shared that he was working on his audition for Steve while working on the 2012 horror movie, The Apparition, which also starred Ashley Greene.
“Bucky Barnes came out of a movie called The Apparition, which was not a great horror film. I was in Germany and Berlin in 2010 shooting The Apparition, this movie, and I was auditioning for Steve Rogers,” said Stan in the GQ interview. “I didn’t even know about Bucky Barnes or anything ’cause I hadn’t read the comic books. And so the Evans role. I was making tapes with Ashley Greene, who was in the movie with me, Apparition, and then sending them to L.A. And then they kept giving me notes to do them again.”
He said during one of the Los Angeles trips, he was asked to do a screen test. In addition, the actor said he believed that the president of Marvel Studios, Kevin Feige, asked to see his scenes from The Apparition during the audition process.
“I’m pretty sure remember that at one point Kevin Feige went to Joel Silver, who was the producer of The Apparition‘s office to watch dailies from The Apparition because they were considering me for Bucky Barnes,” said Stan to GQ.
Sebastian Stan Discussed Playing Bucky Barnes in the Upcoming Film ‘Avengers: Doomsday’
Stan also appeared as Bucky in several MCU projects, including Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), Captain America: Civil War (2016), The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021), and Thunderbolts* (2025). The actor will reprise his role for the upcoming film, Avengers: Doomsday, out on December 18.
Stan discussed working on the upcoming project during an October 2026 interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. He explained that he finds it easy to play Bucky, no matter the script, after doing so for the last 15 years.
“We’ve played these characters for years. That’s what people forget. We’ve played them for so many years. So, it’s not entirely sort of that you’re rear-ended in the moment when you don’t know what’s going on,” said the actor. “I mean, you know how you’re going to react like it’s your left hand, right? There’s an instinct in the character that, immediately, no matter what they throw at you, you’re going to react, and you’re going to know that’s the right thing.”
