No. 7 Alabama soccer hosted unranked Tennessee Friday evening and won 2-1 with two second-half goals.
“We knew going into today it was going to be a hard battle,” said head coach Wes Hart. “Thought they did a good job of getting a lot of numbers behind the ball.”
Alabama held much of the possession in the first half, taking four shots and Tennessee taking three.
In the 16th minute, a VAR review was conducted to see if there would be a penalty kick for Alabama. After the review, it was determined that there was a foul on forward Ashley Roni before a foul in the Tennessee box, giving Tennessee a free kick.
Tennessee forward Sophia Prime scored a goal in the 18th minute.
In the 45th minute, a VAR review was conducted to see if there was a dirty tackle to give Tennessee a penalty kick. After the review, the penalty was not awarded.
Shortly after, Tennessee midfielder Kai Tsakiris received a yellow card for unsportsmanlike conduct, ending the half 1-0.
In the 63rd minute the Crimson Tide had a corner kick, and the initial play did not end in a goal. The ball rebounded and forward Kiley Kukan went for a header.
Tennessee’s Shae O’Rourke earned her second yellow for fouling Kukan in the box, resulting in a red card and an Alabama penalty kick. Forward Larkin Thomason stepped up to the penalty mark and sent the ball to the back of the net to level the score.
“I kind of bet on the goalie jumping a certain way, and not the way that I was going to choose,” Thomason said.
Forward Ashley Roni broke through Tennessee’s line of defense in the 83rd minute, and went on a 1-on-1 with Tennessee goalkeeper Cayden Norris. Roni tapped the ball into the goal just past Norris.
In the 84th minute, Tennessee forward Taylor Cheatham tripped a Crimson Tide player from the back and received a yellow card.
The game ended shortly after, Alabama taking the win 2-1 to end the home season.
“I think just having these fans here and playing at home is everything,” Roni said. “I think that if we keep winning, we’re going to get more home games in the tournament.”
Alabama soccer will be back in action Nov. 1 at Mississippi State. The game is set to start at 12 p.m. CT.
