When do clocks fall back in Illinois? Daylight saving time ends soon ...Middle East

News by : (NBC Chicago) -

With the days getting shorter and sunsets coming earlier, a major seasonal shift is coming soon.

Illinois is set to “fall back” in one week – on Sunday, Nov. 1.

Daylight saving time is the period when clocks are moved forward in the spring, while the rest of the year is known as standard time.

Illinois currently shifts between the two. “Springing forward” marks the start of daylight saving time, while “falling back” marks a return to standard time.

Under the Energy Policy Act of 2005, daylight saving time begins on the second Sunday in March and ends on the first Sunday in November. Clocks move forward one hour in March and back one hour in November.

This year, daylight saving time ends Nov. 1, when clocks turn back one hour at 2 a.m.

While the time change will mean an earlier sunset, it will also bring an extra hour of sleep, which may be welcome news for many.

Whether the U.S. should continue changing its clocks twice a year has long been debated.

Sleep experts have advocated for permanent standard time, warning that a shift to permanent daylight saving time could be worse for sleep and health.

“Permanent standard time would basically mean that we were on what is, I guess, biologically the correct time all year round. And I’m going to say biologically correct because our bodies are more used to and have evolved to be on what would be considered standard time over the years,” Dr. James Rowley, a professor of medicine at Rush University and the immediate past president of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine told NBC Chicago in a previous interview.

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine has pushed for permanent standard time, saying it better aligns with the body’s internal clock and could reduce health and safety risks associated with seasonal time changes, including cardiovascular events and deadly crashes.

Daylight saving time isn’t set to resume until March 14, 2027. But that could change.

That could be up in the air, as the Senate considers legislation to make daylight saving time permanent after the House passed the measure this summer.

The Senate has not yet taken up the measure, but if they do, the twice-yearly switching of clocks could become a thing of the past.
