UNC split a pair of weekend games as it draws near the end of the regular season. The Tar Heels dropped a hard-fought game to No. 10 Wake Forest on Senior Day at Karen Shelton Stadium Friday, but rebounded Sunday by traveling up to Boone and dominating Appalachian State.
Against the Demon Deacons, Ryleigh Heck scored twice in the first half to give the Tar Heels a 2-1 lead at halftime. But it was Wake who came out the stronger in the second half, scoring in the first minute of the third quarter and then again later in the period to take a 3-2 lead. Coco Courtright leveled the score again at 3-3 in the fourth quarter before Wake Forest answered again, scoring the game winner with 2:59 to go. Charly Bruder had UNC’s last and best chance to tie the game in the final two minutes, but her shot was saved.
Great game of hockey. Still proud of the things we did well. Continuing to work on what we need to improve.

The Tar Heels took out their frustrations on the Mountaineers Sunday. Carolina scored three goals in a span of 4:03 late in the first quarter, then held that 3-0 lead until Reese Anetsberger and Courtright both added goals in the fourth quarter for the 5-0 win.
UNC outshot Appalachian State 27-3 overall, had a 20-2 edge in shots on target and a 13-0 edge in penalty corners. The +24 shot differential tied for Carolina’s best all season, while the +18 differential in shots on target and +13 differential in corners both were season highs.
The Tar Heels are now 10-6 overall and 5-2 in league play. UNC will visit No. 7 Duke in the regular season finale in Durham Friday, Oct. 30 at 6 p.m., but fans will still have a chance to see the team in Chapel Hill after that. The ACC Tournament begins the following week and will be played at Karen Shelton Stadium for the first time ever.
