Janet Jackson‘s epic Control album celebrated its 40th anniversary on Feb. 4 and Paula Abdul is reflecting on the large part she played in the music’s success. The 64-year-old singer opened up about choreographing four of Jackson’s iconic music videos for songs on the album, including “What Have You Done for Me Lately,” “Control,” “When I Think of You” and “Nasty,” in an interview with PEOPLE on Oct. 22.
“I was really fortunate and blessed at a very young age to have as my first artist as a choreographer to work with as Janet Jackson,” Abdul said at the 2026 Dancers Against Cancer’s Gala Of The Stars in Beverly Hills, Calif.
“Rare gems like that only come around… You know when you’re witnessing that and to be able to be such a huge part of the Control album and all the accolades that she received from it and all the jobs and opportunities that I received from it, I will always be grateful for working with Janet,” she continued. “I’m so proud to see her shining continuously, and it’s great when I get to see her tonight too.”
After working with Jackson, Abdul went on to make hit songs of her own when she launched a successful solo career in 1988. She released three studio albums, including Forever Your Girl, Spellbound, and Head Over Heels up until 1995 and went on to headline two solo tours, including one from 2018 to 2019. She also gained popularity when she was a main judge on American Idol during its first eight seasons from 2002 to 2009.
“I’ve been fortunate enough to have the most amazing career as a world-renowned choreographer and artist,” Abdul further told the outlet. “I’ve dreamt of having a career like this, and it superseded any of my aspirations, my dreams, and I’m so grateful for that. I’m grateful that I’ve had the ability, which is one of my favorite things to do, is help pave the way and open the doors for other young talent.” Control, which was released in 1986, received many accolades, including a nomination for the Grammy Award for Album of the Year and a Producer of the Year, Non-Classical win.
