In his latest post sharing news, notes, nuggets, and tidbits, NFL insider Tom Pelissero reports that the Indianapolis Colts have “received strong trade interest” in defensive tackle DeForest Buckner.
I hope the Chicago Bears are one of those teams showing interest.
Buckner, 32, has the reputation of being one of the league’s best defensive linemen. A three-time Pro Bowler and two-time All-Pro, Buckner has recorded 75.5 sacks, 101 tackles-for-loss, and 196 quarterback hits in 157 games with the Colts (2020-present) and San Francisco 49ers (2016-2019) over the course of the last 11 seasons. He rushes the passer, stops the run, and is an absolute menace in the trenches. Given the Bears’ needs along the interior of the defensive line, Buckner should be high on their wish list ahead of the Nov. 10 NFL Trade Deadline.

And the Colts need to make him available before we get too far in the weeds discussing a potential trade with the Bears. That said, it feels like Indianapolis is primed for a possible fire sale.
The Colts are 2-4 and started the week by firing General Manager Chris Ballard. If the team wanted to do a full-blown sell-off, trading players on expiring contracts (like Buckner or eight-time Pro Bowl guard Quenton Nelson) could net the front office some valuable draft capital. But judging by Pelissero’s reporting, it doesn’t sound like the Colts have decided to start a sell-off just yet. Nevertheless, we’ll continue monitoring with great interest.
Why DeForest Buckner Makes Sense as a Bears Trade Candidate
Don’t get me wrong. I like what the Bears’ defensive line has done up to this point in the season. Through seven games, we’ve seen a resurgent Grady Jarrett and a motivated Dayo Odeyingbo playing well. Kentavius Street and Daniel Hardy are among the reserves who have had some solid moments. Still, it would be nice to add a difference-maker who makes his teammates better. This is where trading for DeForest Buckner would make sense for Chicago.
And it’s not just me saying it!
While the Bears defensive line has had its moments, it could use someone like DeForest Buckner. Mandatory Credit: Brett Davis-Imagn ImagesThis is what The Athletic’s Daniel Popper (who lists the Bears among the best trade fits) had to say about DeForest Buckner ahead of the 2026 NFL Trade Deadline:
Buckner voiced some pretty overt frustration after the Colts’ loss to the Titans in Week 6. “I’m sick and tired of the same song and dance every year,” he told reporters in the locker room. The Colts traded for Buckner in March 2020. They made the postseason that year. They have missed the playoffs in each season since, while Buckner has been one of the best interior defenders in the league. Like Nelson, Buckner is on an expiring deal. Through six weeks, he led the Colts in sacks (four) and pressures (19). Buckner missed seven games in 2025 with a neck injury but has looked healthy in 2026.
Even in his age-32 season, DeForest Buckner is playing well. He has 4 sacks, 4 tackles-for-loss, and 8 quarterback hits in six games. Pro Football Focus lists Buckner as the site’s 41st-best interior defensive lineman among the 130 who have played enough snaps to qualify for the leaderboard. What stands out about Buckner’s 2026 profile is his 75.3 pass-rushing grade, which is the 12th-best among players in his position group. I’d like to see Chicago upgrade its interior pass rush. If all it costs is a Day 3 pick, Bears General Manager Ryan Poles shouldn’t hesitate to make the move.
