Stephen King ‘Excited’ That Carrie Season 2 Moves Her Story Past the Book ...Saudi Arabia

News by : (Parade) -

Warning: spoilers for the Season 1 finale of Carrie follow.

In Stephen King’s 1974 novel and Brian De Palma’s 1976 film, Carrie White’s story ends with a ruined prom and a burning town. Mike Flanagan’s Prime Video series rewrote that fate, giving the telekinetic teen a second season.

Prime Video renewed the series on Thursday, Oct. 22, two weeks after all eight episodes arrived on Oct. 7. King, an executive producer, said he and Flanagan “are excited about what comes next.” Flanagan returns as showrunner, with Trevor Macy also executive producing. The announcement did not include a release date.

The show, starring Summer H. Howell as Carrie, has been a global hit. It reached No. 1 on Prime Video in more than 105 countries, though the streamer does not release viewership figures. Peter Friedlander, head of global television for Amazon MGM Studios, said the series is drawing longtime King fans and a new generation, with particular strength among female viewers.

The renewal follows a season finale radically different from the source. Where the book and the 1976 film end with Carrie’s death, Flanagan’s version has her survive and leave town with Emaline, played by Thalia Dudek, who can astral project. The finale also reveals that a secret organization of psychics and telekinetics has been monitoring Carrie, setting up a much larger world for the story to explore.

Flanagan has said the decision was about the character first. He says that his team decided early that this Carrie deserved to survive, whether or not more seasons came. He also said the ending had to work even if the final frame of Episode 8 turned out to be the last time viewers saw her.

King was on board from the start. Ahead of the premiere, he told the Portland Press Herald he liked how the story had been updated for an era of cellphones and social media while keeping its foundation intact, including the prom scene and the pig’s blood.

“From the beginning, we imagined a story that goes far beyond the prom,” Flannigan says. He has described his dream scenario as three seasons, calling Carrie’s arc a trilogy, and the renewal puts him two-thirds of the way there.

Not every critic has embraced the change. TV Guide’s review warned that the ending risks undermining an otherwise compelling series, and the debate over the ending has continued since the premiere. Season 2 will now test whether a story long defined by one prom night can carry Carrie White through a longer arc, one that King himself has endorsed.
