Hank Williams Jr. spent this summer on the road again, playing amphitheaters from Florida to Maine. At 77, he’s still drawing crowds decades after a day in Montana nearly ended everything.

On August 8, 1975, the son of Hank Williams was climbing Ajax Peak, on the Montana-Idaho border, with rancher Dick Willey. At roughly 9,000 feet, the snow beneath him gave way. He slid and tumbled, striking several rocks before landing face-first on a boulder.

The damage was horrific. His face was split from chin to hairline, his teeth were gone and his right eye had been knocked out of its socket. He later said his head swelled to “the size of a watermelon.”

Willey hiked out for help and found a forest ranger, who radioed for a helicopter. Six men carried Williams to a landing spot, and he reached a hospital in Missoula about six hours after the fall.

Doctors warned he might never sing again. Over the next two years, he went through a long string of reconstructive surgeries and a slow, painful recovery. From then on, he hid the scars behind a beard, a cowboy hat and dark sunglasses, the look fans still know him by.

He didn’t just return. He came back bigger.

Starting in 1979, he rattled off a run of Top 10 hits, with songs like “Family Tradition” and “All My Rowdy Friends Are Coming Over Tonight” defining his hard-living, Southern rock-tinged sound. He was named CMA Entertainer of the Year in 1987 and again in 1988.

He won a Grammy for “There’s a Tear in My Beer,” a duet built around a recording by his late father. His reworked “All My Rowdy Friends” opened Monday Night Football for years and earned him four Emmys.

In 2020, he was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame, joining his dad.
