Don Sammons liked to say he was “a man with his own zip code, his own town, his own gas station and trading post,” per NBC News. Sammons was the only resident of Buford, Wyoming, and the town’s sign read “POP: 1,” the Daily Beast said.

Buford sits on Interstate 80 between Cheyenne and Laramie. It was founded in 1866 and was once a railway town of about 2,000 people, NBC News reported. Sammons moved there in 1980 and bought it in 1992, according to KOWB.

In 2012, Sammons, then 61, put the town up for auction through Williams & Williams. The sale included five buildings, post office boxes, a leased cellular tower, and 10 acres of land, NBC News said. The listing started at $100,000, and bidders from more than 70 countries expressed interest.

The winning bid was $900,000. NBC News reported that two Vietnamese businessmen attended the auction in person, and the Daily Beast said the buyer exclaimed, “It’s an American dream!”

The buyer was later identified as Pham Dinh Nguyen, an importer from Ho Chi Minh City, per Comunicaffe. In 2013, he announced plans to make Buford the headquarters of a coffee company called PhinDeli Town Buford, with a name that combines the Vietnamese words for filter and delicious, Comunicaffe said. Sammons was set to stay on to run the Buford Trading Post.

By 2017, the trading post was the only brick-and-mortar U.S. store selling PhinDeli coffee, according to NPR. In 2018, KOWB reported that Buford’s population had gone from one to zero. The storefront was shuttered, and the gas pumps were turned off.
