A suspect wanted in connection to the fatal shooting of an Illinois National Guardsman in 2021 has been added to the FBI’s “10 Most Wanted” list.
According to an alert issued by the bureau’s Chicago office on Tuesday, Joseph “Troubles” Matos has now been added to the FBI’s “Ten Most Wanted Fugitives” list, and a reward of up to $1 million has been offered in connection to his case.
Matos is accused of shooting and killing 19-year-old Illinois National Guard member Chrys Carvajal as he left an Independence Day celebration in Chicago’s Belmont Cragin neighborhood on July 3, 2021.
It is believed Matos committed the crime in connection to his role as a member of the Milwaukee Kings street gang in Chicago, according to the FBI.
“Today’s addition of Matos to the FBI’s notorious Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list ensures that his face and description will be found on every FBI-affiliated website and social media platform, and this case will now be on every phone around the world until he is apprehended,” Special Agent in Charge Ryan Whalen said in a statement.
It is alleged that Matos, a rival gang member, shot and killed Carvajal while he was walking to his car during an Independence Day weekend celebration on July 3, 2021.
An arrest warrant was issued for Matos in 2024, and the search remains ongoing for his whereabouts.
He is described as a 44-year-old Hispanic male, standing 6-feet-2 and weighing approximately 220 pounds with brown hair and brown eyes. He has a “M-Town Kings” tattoo on the right side of his neck, “1300” tattoo on the left side of his neck, “Move in Silence” on his right hand, “Trust No One” on his left hand, and “MOST WANTED” on his belly.
He is presumed to be in the United States, and has ties to Dallas and California, but is believed to be hiding in the greater Chicago area.
Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call the FBI’s toll-free tipline at 1-800-CALL-FBI (1-800-225-5324) or to contact the FBI via their website.
