A suburban driver was killed when the car he was driving crashed into several trees and “split into pieces,” authorities said.
The crash happened early Thursday morning in unincorporated McHenry, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s office.
Police said the driver of an Audi S4 was clocked on a police radar traveling 74 mph in a 35 mph zone just after 1:30 a.m. on the eastbound side of Dowell Road near Neville Road.
As a McHenry County Sheriff’s deputy attempted to turn around and pull the vehicle over, the driver sped up and lost control of the vehicle, authorities said.
The vehicle was found about 200 feet off the roadway, having struck several trees, police said.
“The Audi was split into several pieces, and the driver was ejected,” the Lake County Sheriff’s office wrote in a release.
The 23-year-old driver, who was from Lake Villa, was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Because the crash took place on the Lake County line, the crash is under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Team.
