University of Hawaii has announced the hiring of Riley Hilbrandt as its new assistant men’s and women’s swimming & diving coach. Hilbrandt spent the last two seasons as the head coach of Illinois State, and resigned in April.
She fills the slot left by the departure of Christel Simms, a Hawaii alum and Filipino Olympian.
Prior to Illinois State, Hilbrandt was the assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at East Carolina from 2021 through 2024, where she worked primarily with breaststroke and IM groups. Before that, she spent 2 years as an assistant at D2 Clarion University, a season at D3 College of Wooster, and a season as a volunteer assistant at her alma mater, Nevada – another Mountain West Conference team.
Hawaii joins the Mountain West Conference this season as a full member. The men’s and women’s teams both won the Big West Championships last season.
Hilbrandt’s hiring was formally announced after the team’s season-opening intrasquad meet, but before last weekend’s UCSD Triton Invite. Their first dual meet of the season is against Grand Canyon at home on October 23 and 24. The team only has a schedule listed for the fall semester.
As a collegiate swimmer at Nevada (2013–2017), Hilbrandt was an All-Mountain West First Team selection in 2016 and ’17, and she helped the Wolf Pack capture the 2016 Mountain West title. She earned her Bachelor of Science in public health from Nevada in 2017 and later completed her Master of Science in kinesiology with an emphasis in coaching at Georgia Southern University.
Hawaii is led by head coach Steve Allnutt. Ajie Drew took over as the program’s diving coach this year, and the rest of the staff includes assistant swim coaches Lauren Sale, Tim Gallagher, and Ashley Dyer.
