The biggest reaction at Star Trek’s 60-year anniversary New York Comic Con panel went to a very famous fan. Ben Stiller, a lifelong Trekkie, used his time on stage with William Shatner to show one of his biggest treasures from the original series, and the crowd roared.
The unveiling took place Saturday, October 10, at the Javits Center and filled the second half of the Star Trek Universe panel. Stiller led the discussion about the franchise’s 60th anniversary, and Shatner, 95, bantered about the series’ early failures and the shortcomings of his hotel room, which became a running gag.
Stiller played clips from the original series and watched Shatner react. After a scene from “The Enemy Within,” he revealed that he owns the tunic from that episode. “I don’t have a tunic!” Shatner protested.
Then Stiller turned to a box covered in black fabric and revealed what was inside: a Gorn head. The moment drew the biggest reaction from the audience. The Gorn is the reptilian alien Shatner’s Captain Kirk fought in the 1967 episode “Arena.”
Stiller’s collection is well documented. The only known surviving original Gorn head reportedly belongs to Stiller, who bought it at auction in 2006 for a reported $27,500. Coverage of the panel did not say whether the head on stage was that one.

His collection also includes Spock ears. Stiller bought a pair worn by Leonard Nimoy on the original series and that Nimoy later sent him a second pair after spotting the first in Tropic Thunder. Stiller said in 2025 that the ears are his “most treasured possession,” and he described his Star Trek memorabilia as his greatest indulgence.
The reveal came during a busy stretch for Shatner. His documentary The Sixty-Year Mission, which he executive produced, was scheduled to open in Regal theaters October 9. He also missed the franchise’s 60th anniversary panel at San Diego Comic-Con in July, reportedly because of a prior engagement. The NYCC panel also set a March 2027 premiere for the second and final season of Starfleet Academy, with Bill Nighy and Rosemarie DeWitt joining as guest stars. The anniversary has also included a Hall H celebration at San Diego Comic-Con in July, headlined by George Takei, who played Sulu in the original series.
Stiller and Shatner have worked together before. Stiller appeared in The Truth Is in the Stars, a documentary Shatner hosted, and Shatner had a cameo alongside Stiller in Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story.
