Hollywood stars Ben Affleck and Matt Damon famously became friends at the age of eight while growing up in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The pair had similar ambitions as they grew up, both wanting to pursue acting and the entertainment industry. Years later, Damon had the beginnings of a script he was working on for a screenwriting class. The story, which he would later turn into a full feature with the help of Affleck, was the start of Good Will Hunting.
Good Will Hunting became a pivotal moment in the pair’s career, solidifying them as screenwriters as well as leading men. For years while the project was in development, studios were reluctant to attach Damon and Affleck to star, as both were relatively unknown at the time. Finally, in 1995, Miramax greenlit the project and purchased it for a million dollars.
While Affleck has over 60 titles to his name in his filmography, Good Will Hunting remains one of his most beloved. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a 97% “Fresh” score and is the top movie of Affleck’s according to the site. Similarly, it holds the top spot for Damon’s films, too.
At the 70th Annual Academy Awards, Good Will Hunting received nine nominations. Affleck and Damon took home the award for Best Screenplay, and the film earned Robin Williams the award for Best Supporting Actor.
Good Will Hunting follows the titular character Will (played by Damon), who is a 20-year-old self-taught mathematical genius working as a janitor at MIT as part of a program for parolees. When Will finds himself facing jail time following a fight, a professor at MIT arranges for him to avoid going to prison in exchange for studying math with him and attending therapy. Over the course of the film, Will is confronted with the prospect of changing his life and repairing his relationships, including the one with himself.
Good Will Hunting is available to stream on Paramount+, Amazon Prime, YouTube, and Apple TV.
