Hopefully Davis Webb didn’t buy a home in Denver, and is just renting. Because he isn’t long for the Mile High after the current NFL season ends.
After that? Who knows.
Webb, the Denver Broncos recently demoted offensive play-caller – who’s job description still lists him as the offensive coordinator – will be coaching elsewhere in 2027. That’s clearly the best move the 31-year-old coach can make for his immediate coaching future. What does it mean for him in the long term? Is there a possibility of him returning to Dove Valley at some point in the future? We already know he’s a favorite of Broncos ownership.
Bronco fans can only hope that Webb follows the same path Mike Shanahan followed.
History lesson: Back in the mid-1980’s, the Broncos employed two now Hall-of-Fame worthy coaches – head coach Dan Reeves and his young offensive coordinator, Shanahan. The two men had very differing offensive philosophies. Reeves was very conservative (the joke back in the day was that Denver’s offense for the first three quarters was like a ballet: “one, two, three, kick.”) Shanahan, on the other hand, wanted to air it out. Future Hall-of-Fame quarterback John Elway, who felt stifled in Reeves’ offense, was firmly on the side of the young OC.
This caused some head-butting of course, and ultimately Shanahan departed Denver to become the head coach of the Broncos’ hated rival, the then Los Angeles Raiders. He even beat the Broncos during his first season as head man in L.A. in 1988.
After clashing with Raiders owner Al Davis, Shanahan moved on to San Francisco, became the OC of the 49ers and won a Super Bowl… something Reeves also accomplished as an assistant in Dallas, but could never accomplish as the head man in Denver.
Finally, 11 years after he was first hired by Reeves to join the Broncos’ staff, Shanahan returned to become Denver’s head coach in 1995 – and the rest is the very best of Denver Broncos history.
Today, while we don’t have any reason to believe that Sean Payton and Davis Webb don’t get along, we are pretty certain that Webb would welcome the chance to open things up, and that quarterback Bo Nix prefers dealing with him in the same way that Elway preferred Shanahan.
It’s fair to compare Reeves and Payton, both successful NFL head coaches, although few would label Payton “conservative” in his offensive approach. But it’s more than fair to label both men as more or less “control freaks” (what NFL coach isn’t these days?), and it was/is tough for a young offensive coordinator to spread his wings, so to speak, while on that particular coaching staff.
Which brings us back to Webb, the bright young offensive mind who was given a meager four games at the outset of this season to call the team’s offensive plays – plays still designed and game-planned by Payton – before being replaced by the Broncos’ current control freak. The results in the first game with Payton back calling the plays didn’t look any different from what Webb was calling, which can only lead you to believe that Payton’s offense was and has always been Payton’s offense, regardless of who’s sending the plays in. And judging by the offensive output, it’s tough to point the finger squarely at either of them as the cause of the sluggish attack. (Bo Nix, Broncos Country is looking right at you).
According to Payton, Webb has a bright coaching future ahead of him. But as long as Payton is in charge, there’s no room for the first-year OC to grow here.
Shanahan went elsewhere, blossomed, and then returned to lead Denver to a pair of Super Bowl wins as the head coach. Bronco fans would be quite alright if that history repeated itself.
