Today is the fourth consecutive year for ESPN’s NHL Frozen Frenzy. All 32 teams play tonight with staggered start times, beginning with New Jersey at Detroit at 5 PM CT and concluding with Boston at San Jose beginning at 10 PM CT. The great news for us is the league didn’t mess with a good thing: the Blackhawks and Penguins will start at 7 PM CT.
Connor Bedard spoke with us again on Monday, and started by saying he was intentionally going to be vague with his answers because he didn’t have a firm answer — yet. After practice, Blackhawks head coach Jeff Blashill said “it’s certainly trending towards being a coach’s decision” for Bedard to play tonight against Sidney Crosby and the Penguins. We’ll see if/when that’s officially official, so stay tuned… but this is obviously exciting news for a struggling Blackhawks squad.

— Scott Powers (@ByScottPowers) October 12, 2026 A good read here from Ben Pope on how Bedard can help the Blackhawks’ power play more… alive? The Blackhawks' power play has been awful: 1-for-14 with only 10 shots on goal.A spark was desperately needed, and Connor Bedard's return is exactly that.New story analyzing what has gone wrong and how Bedard changes things: t.co/pnsFwvdMcT
— Ben Pope (@BenPopeCST) October 12, 2026 The Athletic is publishing excerpted chapters from The Hockey 100 by Sean McIndoe & Dan Robson. On Monday, they shared a great cut from the chapter about Patrick Kane. A terrific read. We got some incredibly candid comments from Blashill on Monday when talking about a few topics. Here’s what he had to say about trying to find the right line combinations before he has both Bedard and Frank Nazar both available for the first time this season:“Listen, would I like to be the position…Vegas and Carolina are where you have 100% established lines, they don’t move them around a whole bunch, they know that those lines click? Yes, I would love to get there. We just haven’t gotten there.
“Three things make that hard: injuries/suspensions, new players — which we have enough of in important roles — and young players that you don’t know what they are yet… I have to ride that balance of trying to get lines that make sense to us, trying to stay with them for chemistry purposes, but also be willing to change if you have to — to find that right balance for your team — without it being a blender.”
Blashill was also direct with his perspective on stats — again. He opened up more about how the team views their internal stats and digs deeper than a lot of surface-level numbers that we might cite. Here’s a couple minutes of that discussion from after practice yesterday (video from CHGO):Jeff Blashill was very candidly sharing some info on internal stats and what does and doesn't have value. — CHGO Blackhawks (@CHGO_Blackhawks) October 12, 2026 If you missed it yesterday, I chatted with Blackhawks rookies Anton Frondell and Roman Kantserov about their first six games to this season, getting more comfortable in the league and looking forward to Bedard’s return.Blackhawks Rookies Frondell and Kantserov Talk Growing Confidence, Connor Bedard's Return t.co/tKredY3pYL
— Bleacher Nation Blackhawks (@BN_Blackhawks) October 12, 2026 Mike McMahon at College Hockey News reported Arizona State will hire Colorado Avalanche assistant coach Dave Hakstol as their new head coach. The Sun Devils, for whom Blackhawks prospect Nathan Behm is a freshman, have been a turmoil-consumed mess since the preseason, are getting a really good, experienced college coach. I love this hire for both the ASU program and for Behm’s development. A few noteworthy injuries from Monday. The Dallas Stars announced veteran center Matt Duchene had surgery to repair a core injury and is expected to be out three months. The Vegas Golden Knights announced defenseman Parker Wotherspoon will be out week-to-week with an upper-body injury. The Toronto Maple Leafs announced defenseman Chris Tanev has been placed on injured reserve (retroactive to Oct. 10). Tonight’s Blackhawks opponent, the Pittsburgh Penguins, placed defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk on injured reserve. And the Buffalo Sabres played a matinee game against the Florida Panthers. They won the game 5-3, but Rasmus Dahlin left the game early in the second period (upper-body injury) and did not return. Dahlin will not travel with the Sabres to Montreal for their game tonight. Interestingly, with both the Penguins and Sabres hurting for depth on the back end, they made a trade on Monday afternoon — and it included another former Blackhawks, Caleb Jones.?TRADE? We have acquired Caleb Jones and Daniel Laatsch from the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for defenseman Ryan Johnson. Details → t.co/iT5KS4Upb0 t.co/hfqeqOGd4f
