The Denver Broncos were on the field for practice on Tuesday as they prepare for the Seattle Seahawks on Thursday Night Football, and much of the conversation this week has surrounded Bo Nix and the up-and-down start he’s had to his third year.
Denver Broncos QB Bo Nix focused on simplifying the process to play faster
Bo Nix has gotten off to a sluggish start this season from an efficiency standpoint, and the Broncos offense has too. They haven’t been able to run the ball well this season; they’ve had too many inconsistencies in protection, and Nix hasn’t been sharp and has been gun-shy, in particular, over the last two weeks.
Right now he’s completed 97-of-162 passes (59.9%) for 942 yards, six touchdown passes and three interceptions and has been sacked six times, which hasn’t been what we’ve been accustomed to seeing from him. There’s been a noticeable hesitancy from him this year in the passing game, but also in the rushing game.
Bo doesn’t have social media during the season and doesn’t pay attention to it or the outside noise. He has every social media app uninstalled and keeps his focus on himself and what his coaches ask of him, but still, the last two weeks have felt like he’s at least heard the noise, but that could be coming from within.
As Bo took the podium today, he was asked about ways in which he could improve and how the offense can get going.
“I think just making it simple,” Nix said. “Making things, ‘One, two, three.’ Let’s play fast, and let’s roll. I think sometimes I can have a tendency of overanalyzing and overthinking things, and that’s when I’m not at my best. I want to have all the answers and get everything right, and it’s too difficult. 11 guys moving on defense, it’s tough to always figure it out. I do think I can make the game simpler and just get back to, ‘One, two, checkdown,’ that sort of thing and making sure my reads are on point.”
At least in the last two weeks, Nix has looked impacted by paralysis by analysis. He’s a cerebral quarterback who analyzes so much pre-snap and whatever gets thrown at him post-snap, and sometimes that can be detrimental. Against the San Francisco 49ers, Nix seemed hesitant to attack downfield when things were open.
Against the Los Angeles Chargers, there weren’t as many looks like San Francisco with guys coming open, and that’s been a byproduct of Denver’s lack of a run game. They’ve faced mostly four or five-man front defenses with a two-high shell, dropping six or seven defenders back consistently in zone.
In key passing situations on Sunday, the Broncos faced 10 third-and-long (3rd and 7+) scenarios of their 12 third-down attempts, including a 3rd and 24, 3rd and 16, and 3rd and 12. The Broncos offense mostly had three receivers running routes 8+ yards downfield against six or seven spot-dropping defenders in zone who are taking away the vertical element outside, playing over the top inside, and playing their nickel and linebackers underneath to take away the most important windows the offense could attack in long-field scenarios.
“There is this… part of what we’re trying to do is find him these throws where… There are going to be times where he’s going to have to make a play that may be covered pretty well, but he scrambles and finds a throw,” Sean Payton said. “We’re always trying to find those plays that are clean that kind of unfold versus the coverage you want. To answer your question, a lot of it, you’re really paying attention to the game you’re in too, relative to risk. I think that that’s something that his experience certainly at Oregon has helped him… It’s bumpy. We’re constantly grinding to calm it down and create some matchups in some call it first or second in the progression throws that make it less risky.
Until the Broncos offense threatens opposing defenses with the ability to run, safeties and linebackers are going to play further back instead of bringing more traffic up into the box. But creating some quick rhythm throws for Nix could also help open up the run game if they can consistently connect on it.
Nix and the Broncos are 3-2 right now ahead of Thursday’s primetime showdown against the Seahawks, who boast one of the best defenses in the league in nearly every major statistical category. It will be their toughest test, but if they can find a way to make plays and get rolling, it could be the confidence booster they need on offense.
