The SGA unanimously voted Thursday to pass a resolution that formally recognizes “It’s On Us Week” as an annual SGA campaign dedicated to sexual violence prevention and education.
The weeklong initiative runs from Oct. 12-16 and is held in partnership with the national It’s On Us campaign and local organizations such as the Tuscaloosa SAFE Center and the Camellia Center.
Programming includes an educational panel hosted by the UAPD, card making with Sigma Alpha Mu for sexual violence survivors and separate fundraising events at Sadie Sips and Santos Street Eats and Bar.
Elisa Robinson, a senator for the School of Social Work, presented the legislation alongside statistics on sexual violence.
“One in four undergraduate women experience sexual assault,” Robinson said. “About 80% of women worldwide experience some type of sexual harassment or sexual violence, and 43% of men experience sexual violence as well.”
Robinson described the initiative as a series of events that bring awareness and education to the issue of sexual violence on college campuses to bolster support and prevention efforts.
Additionally, an act was passed to increase the number of Bama Asks QR codes across campus to improve the channel of communication between SGA and the student body.
Lilly Wehby, senator for the Culverhouse College of Business, emphasized the importance of accessibility for the QR codes.
“The increase of Bama Asks QR codes across campus, other than the one directly in front of the SGA office, [will allow] students to communicate with us better on the ideas or problems they may have,” Wehby said.
A resolution was also passed to honor the legacy of the late Tuscaloosa City Council President Kip Tyner for his over three decades of service to both the city and state of Alabama.
Bills to establish senate committee chair duties in the SGA Code of Laws and to establish the duties of senate standing committees were passed to improve consistency and accountability in senate operations.
Finally, bills to amend Title XII of the SGA Code of Laws on the basis of insufficient structure in the Student Organization Seating procedure and an act to establish monthly features of student organizations on the senate Instagram account were sent to the rules committee for further review.
