Alabama volleyball falls to Georgia 2-3 in SEC rivalry matchup ...Middle East

News by : (The Crimson White) -

Alabama volleyball fell to Georgia in a thrilling 2-3 match after the Bulldogs held the Crimson Tide to a .145 hitting percentage.

Lily Gervase’s two service aces and Laney Hennessee’s impressive kills led the Crimson Tide to a first-set victory. After the Bulldogs pulled ahead 18-20, a Laney Hennesee kill shifted momentum back toward Alabama. After losing four straight points, Georgia called a timeout to regain control, but the Crimson Tide outlasted the Bulldogs 25-21.

The second set was close and featured several highly contested points, but Georgia’s defense was too good for Alabama, and the Bulldogs won 23-25.

Kaleigh Palmer’s kill started the third set off strong, and the Crimson Tide took an early 3-0 lead. Georgia’s offense struggled to keep up with Alabama and only hit for .118. Alabama’s star outside hitter, Hennessee, delivered the set-winning kill to make it 25-22.

Georgia forced a fifth set after the Crimson Tide fell 22-25 in the fourth set. Alabama had 17 kills compared to Georgia’s 16, but seven Crimson Tide errors proved costly.

Georgia dominated the deciding set 7-15. The Crimson Tide was held to a .286 percentage and committed seven errors with only three kills. The team fought to stay in the match; however, the Bulldogs were stronger.

“I think sometimes in tight moments we want to go back to what’s comfortable,” said head coach Rashinda Reed. “I would like us to finish strong with our scout execution.”

Alabama’s hitting errors were extremely high today, with 40 total. The Bulldogs had half that amount. The team will work to correct these errors in practice before their next match later this week.

Despite the loss, Hennessee set a new career high of 21 kills. Mya Allen recorded 18 kills, and Palmer had 16. Hannah Parant had 51 assists, just two away from a career high.

“I’m bummed about the result, but I’m really proud of how we fought. I thought it was a really good match,” Reed said. “We did a lot of things that we were working on in practice.”

Alabama travels to Nashville to face the Vanderbilt University Commodores on Friday. The match will be available to watch live on SEC Network+ at 7 p.m. CT.
