Nearly five years after Bob Saget’s passing, his widow, Kelly Rizzo, shared an intimate post about her personal grief journey and lessons she’s learned along the way.
Saget died on Jan. 9, 2022 at the age of 65, from blunt head trauma caused by an accidental, backwards fall in his hotel room at The Ritz-Carlton Orlando, Grande Lakes, in Florida.
On Thursday, Rizzo shared a heartfelt message on her Instagram detailing her healing process since his passing, and the “weird” things she’s discovered about bereavement. “Grief morphs and changes forms and evolves over time,” she wrote. “It’s always still there. It just has different personalities from month to month and year to year.”

“I’m still coming to terms with the fact that there will never be another new photo of him.”There’s something particularly heartbreaking about realizing that every photo, video, and voicemail you have of someone is all you’ll ever have. While the rest of the world continues to make new memories, you’re left living off of old ones.
“I still feel guilty for feeling happy.”Grief has a way of making happiness feel like betrayal. You might catch yourself laughing, celebrating a milestone, or simply enjoying life, only to be hit with a wave of guilt because your loved one isn’t there to experience it with you, nor are they able to experience anything ever again. But finding joy again doesn’t diminish how deeply you loved them. Happiness and heartbreak can coexist.

(Photo by Mike Coppola/Getty Images for Tribeca Festival)“Sometimes you catch yourself judging someone else’s grief. Which, of course, is off-limits! I heard about someone dating again after two months, and I immediately thought, ‘That’s too soon!’ Then I feel bad for judging.”There’s no universal timeline or rulebook for grieving, yet it’s easy to measure someone else’s healing against what we think we’d do in their situation. Grief isn’t a competition, and there’s no one-size-fits-all approach to navigating loss. What feels too soon for one person might feel right for another.
“The crying still shows up at the weirdest times!”You could be having a perfectly normal day when a familiar song, a random memory, or even something as simple as a smell brings you to tears. Sometimes, there’s no obvious trigger at all. That’s the unpredictable nature of grief. It can sneak up on you when you least expect it, no matter how much time has passed.

“You still don’t want them to be forgotten. Say their name, tell their stories; it’s so strange how the world still keeps moving.”One of the hardest parts of losing someone is watching the world continue as though your world didn’t come crashing down. Just because someone is no longer physically here doesn’t mean their presence should disappear from our conversations.
Grief isn’t a linear experience. It looks different for everyone, and that doesn’t mean that how you grieve is any better or worse than the next person’s. Everyone’s grief journey is unique to them. This isn’t the first time the 47-year-old TV host and content creator spoke openly about life after Saget’s death. She shared a similar post during her first year as a widow.
